My 4 month old bernese will not leave my side. I work at home and hoped that my two dogs would stay outside and play and do their business while I am sitting at the computer all day.
After I take them out in the morning for the morning play (and my coffee) I try to leave them outside but the puppy is frantic to get inside. He then will spend the entire day at my feet or following me.
I have tried to leave him outside and just ignore his screaming crying to get in but the neighbors complained.
He's fine when I leave the house though he immediately goes into the house when I leave (doggy door). He also broke the doggy door at one point as he was so frantic to get in.
Its really hard for me especially when he 'has an accident' in the house and I need to clean it up, just getting him out of the room is hard!

He's still a baby. He needs you around for security. Puppies follow you around because they depend on you for everything. You can't just leave him in the backyard and expect him to be like an adult dog (which you shouldn't really do that with anyways). Have you thought of getting a crate, and keeping it beside you in your office? Taking him out every hour of so to use the washroom during work hours? You should crate train him, as it will significantly shorten housetraining time, and give you some sanity also.
Just remember, you are his mommy, and he needs you, he's not trying to make you crazy, and he doesn't know that anything he's doing is wrong.

It doesn't bother me that he is at my feet while I work I just feel bad for the dogs that could be taking advantage of the yard and not just my feet. I was also a little worried that he is becoming too much of a mamma's boy having me home all day and might not handle it well if I'm ever less available. Well I am encouraged by your comment that it is because he is a puppy. On the bright side, for the first time today instead of just leaving me a little present in my office he actually got up and went outside to do his number. So, there is a glimmer of hope.
thanks for your advice.

Also, keep in mind, he is a Berner. They can be clingy by nature. This pup is just showing the natural temperment for these guys. They want to be inside with you, not locked out away from you. Don't feel bad that he isn't taking advantage of the yard. He's where he wants to be. Just be sure to go out with him to get him his excercise.

This may work for you.

Get him a bed and put it in your office, close to you. After you can get him to stay on the bed, slowly start moving it farther away. After awhile, you should be able to get him to stay on his bed even if it is in another room. You could also take his bed with you to other rooms when you aren't working so that he REALLY likes it.

Hope this helps.
