So, today was the first day since last summer I let Hunter stay out all day and enjoy the warm sunshine with our dog we're babysitting, Annie. Come home from work to see he'd dug a huge chunk from under the fence gate with big rocks in the way. I can't believe he fit his huge body through that opening! He comes running to me covered in MUD but all happy and stuff. Until I scorned him and washed him down with the hose. Then when he came in the house and I got online, I notice he's completely in pain! He keeps moving his back end around trying to get comfortable laying down but can't. He's constantly moving his backend from side to side and moving his legs here and there and groaning. He tries to get back there and "see" what is hurting... seems to go to his tail and his legs. I've felt up and down the tail and he doesn't cry so I don't think it's broken. I haven't a CLUE as to what's going on! I just gave him an Ascriptin and will see what happens in about 30 minutes or so... any ideas????
 :(

Hmmm. Poor baby. Did you run your hands all over his back end especially along the spine? He might have a tender area or bump that you find. My guess is that he's pulled something and he'll be fine. My cat did that somehow last fall. I didn't take her to the vet because we didn't have any cash. I mean we were food bank poor for a couple of weeks. I moved it around and it wasn't dislocated or didn't seem to be causing her a large amount of pain. She limped for about a week and then got over it. She's fine now. It's scary when that happens. Our babies!

I think if it gets worse or is persistant you should take him to the vet. What is Ascriptin? An anti-inflammatory? If it is you'll get a better idea of what it is - or isn't.

Hope he feels better!

Thanks, Saje. Ascriptin is people's over the counter "aspirin" that dogs can take -- it contains maloxx which is ok for their stomach. He wouldn't really let me investigate it -- would just sit right down and groan. But I did push on all the areas and have, I believe, located it's source at mid-tail. And that seems to be where he tries and put his nose the most. And he's holding his tail kind of weird yet still wags at times! He is so uncomfortable! He's a vocal dog, anyway. And he's just groaning and groaning. Trying to tell Mamma something's wrong and trying to get comfortable. It breaks my heart. Maybe he over-extended his tail while digging out from under the gate? If it were broken, I wouldn't think he could wag at ALL and it would just hang? And he would scream if I touched him there? I can't think it's his hips or he'd be limping or something. He tries to get into his bear rug/frog butt lay to get relief, but quickly moves. And moves. And moves. And groans the whole time trying to get comfortable. He just layed on his back with his back legs splayed and his tail in Annie's face. I think it is his tail. :(

Poor baby.

I think you are right - that nothing is broken. Maybe he got it caught somewhere or pinched in his adventure. Those tails can get in the way!

I don't really have any advice. Maybe just wait and see how he is tomorrow.

You could ice it maybe?

He's either the biggest trooper in this pain or he's a big baby... I don't know which!!! It's breaking Mamma's heart!!!! He keeps coming up to me groaning like saying "Mamma, take it away!" Something else I've noticed... he keeps shooting his "Fart Darts" out. A quick and forceful fart that surprises even him. Now I wonder if he's got something lodged in his butt!!! Well, it's feeding time... I'll see how he does and get back to you in a bit...

I've found that the majority of the time they are just being big babies and squeezing as much affection out of the situation as possible! ;)

Poor ol' Hunter!! :( If he'd broken his tail the end would be all limp and lifeless, so if it's wagging I would think it's ok!! He's probably just over done it today and is now suffering like we do when we've done far too much gardening!! Hope he feels better soon! :)

And this is how Grammy hears about it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!My poor baby !! Have you checked carefully under the hair for a pellet ?? Someone could have hit him too...... I wouldn't worry too much if he ran up to you when you got home. He may have just wrenched something getting out. He's not doing the " Rufus sympathy thing" is he ???

Sorry, Mommy  Yes, I sprained the good ole useless, ligament torn ankle again.

Well, I think it's a sprained tail! He let me go over him more (I think the Ascriptin kicked in) He ate all his dinner and is now barking at something outside. I'll bet he bent that tail in two trying to get out of that little space today! I'll keep y'all posted...

My mum's friend has a dog called Rufus and he does the sympathy thing!!!!! He had a slight limp once and he kept this limp going for months as he got sympathy!! Sometimes he forgot which leg it was and limped on the other one!! Lol! :D :D There was nothing whatsoever wrong with him!! :D

I'm glad Hunter isn't off his food! That has to be a good sign!

OOOOWWW! Did he slice himself open? I guess Hunter will forever be an inside dog, even on nice days (when I'm not home). Had $400 of fence fixing done from last summer from him tearing into it and getting out. Doesn't look like it's going to stop. At least he left the fence alone, but dug underneath and then INJURED his DARN SELF!!!!

OMGosh that's hilarious. Our Rufus (big ole red golden retriever) would get "hurt" and would limp around and act like he's dying as long as the sympathy would go on. One time, we were really scared. A horse kicked him straight on the noggin and he layed there like he was dead. We all went to him and made over him and made over him and he just layed there. Then when we thought he was dead and there's nothing else we could do, we got up and started to leave the scene of the accident. That's when he jumped up all happy and prancing and wanted to play with us!

Yes . Sliced himself open and kept going.. When i got to him he was on her leg trying to do the deed..She was a big dog!.. I picked him up and took him inside and my daughter called the animal hospital ...cost an arm and leg because it was after hours...From then on i made him ware his plastic collar out to potty because he could not go under fence with it on. I had him fixed a month later and he has never tried to get out sence.

Someone told me that there is something that you can drive into the ground around the fence where they can not dig out.

Oh, I forgot... when Rufus heard the word "CAR", that's when he jumped up and was all happy! Because he knew that word and thought GREAT, I'm Goin' CAR-CAR!

Hunter is still rolling around and groaning. I think the Ascriptin has helped, though. He just can't get comfortable!
