My hubby went to the store tonight and I was home alone with the pup. Nothing out of the ordinary... I spend a lot of time home alone, even at night.
Well, I was listening to music rather loudly as I played a game on the computer with lola sleeping in my lap.

All of a sudden lola jumps up and starts barking and growling. I shut the music off to see if I could hear anything, but I didn't. She kept on and on with the barking and growling and perching her head out like she was looking at someone peering around the corner. She kept whining and looking at me... almost like a dog would do if they had to go out to go potty.. but if you knew lola, you'd know that she NEVER asks to go outside. She'd just drop her butt and pee. Besides.. dogs don't growl and bark like she was to go out to pee. I was sure she heard something.

Keep in mind that all the lights in the house are off... the only light was the light from the computer monitor. I had no idea if the doors were even locked and I had the music really loud so if anyone had walked into my house... I would have never heard them.

So, of course I'm thinking someone is in the house and standing perfectly still because i have the music off now. I was afraid to move. Lola then jumps off my lap and goes racing out into my living room and proceeds to keep barking and growling like she was gonna tear someone apart. It scared the living poop out of me.

The people on the game site I was on were all worried about my safety and there was this one person who kept telling me to call 911. Well, at first it just sounded like someone who was looking out for my best interest. But then this person kept talking to me like I was an idiot or something. I told them I wasn't going to call 911 because my dog was barking and growling. There was no concete evidence someone was in my house or trying to get into the house. I'm sorry.. but I just wasn't going to call 911 for that. I did call my hubby on his cell phone and told him what was going on and he said he was on his way home and that he would call my neighbor and ask him to come over and check on me. Mind you... this is the same neighbor who came over to check on us one night when we were horsing around and flickering lights on and off in the house and he thought we were trying to send him a signal we needed help. He laughed at us and said anytime we needed him for something to call him. I told the chat room in the game I was fine and that my neighbor would come over and check the place if my hubby could get a hold of him.

Well, this one person starts in on me and was insinuating I was a fool for not calling 911 in the beginning. And then went on to say how I put my neighbor's life in danger... etc. First of all... I'm not gonna tie up 911 with a barking and growling dog when someone else who is having a heart attack might not get the help they desperately need. And again... there was no evidence of anyone entering the house at that time. It was probably just a coyote she was hearing or some kind of animal outside. I'm just surprised she could hear anything with my music as loud as it was. It kind of made me mad being scolded like that. My neighbor offered a long time ago to come over if we ever needed help like that. He's a big marine guy.. and I mean HUGE.

I eventually mustered up the courage to grab something to hit someone with and ventured out into the house and began turning on all the lights. It was at that time I discovered that none of the doors were locked. I crept around the house looking around and locking doors as I still turned on lights.... waiting for someone to jump out at me. I never found anything. Did I forget to mention the ONLY thing I could find to hit someone with was a dog toy...lol. It probably wouldn't have done much damage, but maybe it could have caught someone off guard and stun them long enough for me to kick them where they'd drop to the floor and beg for forgiveness...lol.

I'm glad no one was trying to break in and that all is well. I'm also glad I didn't call 911 for a false alarm. It was just unusual behavior for her and I've just never seen her act like that before... she DEFINATELY heard something. I think it's so amazing that a puppy can have that protective nature like that.

I would NOT have called 911 at that point either. But you really should have a weapon to defend yourself and know where it is at. If you don't like guns, then at least pepper spray. My dogs have done the exact same thing, I never found out what they were upset about, but it sure is scary.....And from now on make sure all your doors and windows are locked.......at least you can hear an entry easier if they have to bust a door in, instead of just turning a door knob.

I am glad everything turned out okay for you......and unless someone is with you in your situation they should NOT make you feel like you didn't do the right thing. Don't give a second thought to your online friends........

But I can also say, don't be afraid to use 911 if you feel the need. Some stupid people call 911 when they don't have a ride to town (this has happened several times in hubby's county), Can you imagine?

I agree, people use the 911 line as if tho it is a chat line or something. I dispatch so I have gotten those calls where people tie up the line cause they see dog tracks in their front lawn. I say in a calm and stearn voice that they must call in on the regular line to file a complaint.

If you were absolutely sure someone entered your house - call 911, if not, dial the regular police line. People abuse the 911 system too much, it's for life and death situations, not for complaints.

not to hijack this thread or anything...but yeah, i remember reading articles on how ppl have to get put on hold, and end up dying or something, cause of that. I think the local police # should be required to be programmed onto everyone's house phone or something...cell phone too...especially in instances like my bro's...he was way too scared to go in the house, so he HAD to call 911 (then again...i live in a neighborhood where a fire in an outdoor light required 5 police cars and 3 fire trucks, who arrived AFTER the neighbor put it out with a fire extinguisher, LOL

I am so glad your ok, I wouldn't have called 911 either.
I was going to work one night and had my sis with me. We had to stop by my house to get something. Anyway the back door was standing wide open. I told my sis to grab what ever she could to use as a weapon until we could get to where the gun was. I grab a baseball bat, that was just inside the door. We got to the closet where the gun was, I got the gun and turned to hand her the bat. And about died when I seen what ahe had to use for defence. A big ole whoppin FLY SWATTER!! There wasn't anyone in the house, but we had a good laugh about it afterward. From then on Hubby keeps 2 bats by the door, plus having the dogs in the house.

That must have been a scary event. Through their keen senses dogs do know when something isn't right. One night we had retired for the night and as usual Duke was plopped on the bed. As soon as I turned the light out Duke started to alert with a deep muffled woofing growl. I turned the light on and could see he was focused on the bedroon closet door. I knew it couldn't be a person in there but it could have been some uninvited critter.
When I sat up in bed so I could see the entire closet door I saw the intruder. Sticking out from under the closet door was the toe of one of my socks.
Trying not to laugh I then "attacked" the sock with Dukes help until we were both satisfied that the intruder had been dealt with to his satisfaction.:)
I never doubt nor ignore any alert they give me, serious or not.

lol I was listening to the scanner a couple of weeks ago and some woman called all paniced because there were flames all around her house. When they asked where she was she said "I"m in my house!" lol and they asked for directions she said "call ..... they know!" ROFL that helps. Turns out an old car had caught fire or something.

I think you did the sensible thing too, Nancy. Of course, I'm probably not a good judge when it comes to calling 911 because the dogs are upset . . . shoot, with my bunch, I just figure some intruder is going to save me a day or two's dog food :p

And truthfully, around here, 911 is the last place I'd look for help. I'm more wary of the cops around here than I am the crooks . . . Sad, but true.

I really think that dogs do have a sixth sense about stuff like that. Before my husband left for Iraq, I was up late at night one time. All of a sudden, our three dogs (pitbull, blue heeler, and Alaskan Malamute) jump up and haul butt to the kitchen window and start barking and clawing at the window. Now, my blue heeler is INSANELY protective over me, and has a tendency to go crazy over leaves in the front yard that move too fast. But our pit and Mal are not too protective. (If someone tried to rob our house, the girls would more than likely offer to help carry stuff out on their back!) I woke up my husband and make him look outside. He saw nothing. The dogs kept doing the same thing all night long, driving us crazy with paranoia. But the next morning, our neighbor tells us that a group of kids were breaking into housed all over the neighborhood. After that night, I firmly believe that dogs have a sixth sense! And I am SOOOO thankful about my ACD crazy protectiveness since my hubby is deployed right now!

Nancy, that is scary! Way to go Lola for protecting her mommy!

I hate being home alone, but now with the puppy being as protective as he is, whenever he barks I grab him and the billy club and we investigate.

The other night, I was doing laundry(the washer/dryer are in the basement) and the drain tube thingy on the back of the washer fell off and the dogs heard it, both of them started barking and growling and go to the basement door and were seriously on full guard going nuts, so I grabbed the billy club, which hangs next to the cellar door, and took the dogs down into the basement, only to find out that it was the drain pipe that fell off and water was EVERYWHERE!

When I'm home alone or my boyfriend is home alone, at any noise the dogs alert us and go nutty. One of the many reasons I love my four legged furry body guards!

I'm glad you're safe!!

Omg! lol, I got scared just reading that story o-0;
Man! That would have been SO scary, being as I am paranoid anyway. Do you think if there was a person, maybe he (or she) heard your pup barking and ran out the door before anyone could see him?
That kind of thing happened to my mom before, she was in the kitchen, home alone, unknowing that the doors were unlocked.. and she was expecting some friends to come over to play Monopoly with her (lol). When her friends came they asked why the front door was wide open, and she had NO idea! Then she looked around the house and things in her bedroom were knocked over and things like jewlrey were stolen, and her window was open too.
Ugh. That is so scary. Well, Im glad youre alright :D Hopefully it wasnt anything bad
