That was so rude of her! I can't believe she actually grabbed you! Grrrr stupid woman. Well done for keeping your calm though Grace, I know I would have probably lost my temper especially if someone touched me like that. Good girl Eve!!

People are stupid.

Good Job, Eve! Jager can barely hold a sit in a store like that, let alone a down stay.

You weren't mean, the woman was just stupid.

I would like to congratulate the kid though. While she overreacted to being told "no", she did at least ask! It would have been much more annoying and disrupted Eve's training even more if the kid had just plunked down and started petting her.

You see? I told you! People are crazy! They think they are entitled to YOUR dog! They think their spoiled bratty kids are entitled to YOUR dog! Most of all, they think you are LIABLE if it doesn't work out!

I'm cracking up here. My special saying for mothers like that is, "Well while we are here, do you mind if I rough up your KID?".

I've been thinking of carrying around a legal document for mothers like that. I can whip it out and say, "Here, sign this release holding me harmless, and then your kid can pet my dog". That ought to slow em down, eh?

The thing is, I used to always let people pet Tosca until a few brats got too damned rough to suit me. So now I don't trust any kid I don't know. Especially not a RUNNING kid. Your instincts about this child were very good. She was a spoiled brat and she proved it by running to her mom and whining about how she couldn't do what she wanted with somebody else's dog. Just Thank God she wasn't yours. lol.

I totally agree, Topshelf. I was so glad she asked and had she not been so squealy and had Eve been older and better trained, I'd have said yes. Unfortunately, Eve cannot under any circumstances be allowed to jump on people (I'd like her to do therapy work when she gets older) and everyone is of the mindset that she's a puppy and it's okay. It is NOT okay and I don't even want to give her the idea that jumping on people is an option. Plus, she pees when people loom over her. I don't think it's submission so much as excitement, but she pees nonetheless and so if someone isn't going to follow my directions, they don't pet her. Period. This little girl was bouncing around and it seemed like a disaster waiting to happen if she made contact with the pup.

I'm certainly not a snob with my dogs, but I want to give Eve the best start possible and that means avoiding the people who will just set her training back. I did feel bad about saying no to a child who asked, though. Come to think of it, I should've thanked her for asking first.

Ugh, I know how you feel. When Chloe was 12 weeks old and at the vet's getting her shots, a little kid came up to me and tried to grab hold of her. I explained to him that she was young and delicate, and that he could gently pet her on her back, but he couldn't grab her. He continued to try to grab her... and then his mom walked over. His mom explained to me that he was mentally retarded and would love to hold my dog (since he would be getting a small puppy soon). I told her that I wouldn't let a child hold my 2lb dog (how awful of me, right?!) and she was just so offended. Some people just don't understand... I mean, to let a young child walk up and try to grab someone's dog?! For all they know, my puppy could've had an infinate number of health problems and diseases.

That's what I was thinking. Someone forgot to take their meds, or shouldn't leave the house with PMS....she was some kind of crazy.:yikes:

Renee's right too. God help her if she grabbed an adults arm, she'd likely be looking at an assault charge. How dare she touch you or have the nerve to tell you what you should do with your puppy.

I guess the world revolves around her and her daughters 'needs', she'll soon see where that will get her.

Good girl Eve:) and good for you for not slugging her, that took some incredible restraint.;)

Yes, you're unfriendly. Of course what you should have said is "Sure, your kid can pet my dog, but first you must make your daughter sit down, shut up, and let my dog slap her on the head while making high pitch squealing sounds." :yikes:

Doc, you get in a whole helluva lot more trouble for assaulting a minor ;)
Oh I agree but my point was that people take liberties with minors that they wouldn't consider taking with an adult for fear of repercussion. I doubt most women would so readily grab the arm of another adult.

Didn't know if maybe there was a subtle difference in the law up over the border there, Doc ;)

Down here in several parts of the country a lot of women aren't shy about roughing up much of anyone . . . CATFIGHT!!! LOL!

This just confirms that some people are stupid...not your garden variety stupid, but more of a senseless I don't give a s**t about other people stupid. These are the type of people I can't stand. If someone told my son he couldn't pet their dog, he sure wouldn't come running to me. He would simply walk off and find something else to do. What a moron. You have restraint, that's all I can say. There would have been a big ole scene in Petco if someone had grabbed my arm. Great job Eve, what a good girl. Zoe would have gone apeshit if someone were assaulting me.

I totally agree, Topshelf.
:eek::eek: someone agrees with me?! wth?

Unfortunately, Eve cannot under any circumstances be allowed to jump on people
Exactly! I was walking Jager a couple weeks ago and we passed a four year old. She asked her dad/grandpa/uncle/whoever the guy she was walking with was if she could pet him and then asked me. i was thrilled, but i said "let me get ahold of him, he likes to jump on people, and i don't want him to get mud on your pretty coat." And i grabbed his harness and made him sit before they came near him. Later, a guy about my age asked, and when i said "he jumps" he was like "aw, that's okay" and so i said "no, it's not. I'm teaching him not to. If you can't respect that, you can't pet him" and walked away.

I'm certainly not a snob with my dogs, but I want to give Eve the best start possible and that means avoiding the people who will just set her training back. I did feel bad about saying no to a child who asked, though. Come to think of it, I should've thanked her for asking first.
You didn't have time to thank her, she burst out crying and ran to mommy because she's a spoiled brat. I can see part of the mother's point too, if you've got a child who's dogphobic and they're starting to get over it, you don't want some "mean lady" hindering your child's training either. But ultimately, children learn from their parents and she was WAY out of line. All her daughter got from the experience is "if i don't get what i want, my mom will act like a witch on my behalf".

I'd have punched the woman. Or called the store manager over and said she was assulting me and shouldn't be allowed back in the store. ;)
