Hey,

So this morning when I got up, my puppy had been sick a few times over night and had some diarrhea as well, he also had some diarrhea the day before but didn't think to much of it as he had a few treats that day.

So we got him to the vets today and he said he had a touch of gastro, gave him an injection and told us to just stay away from food and give him this sachet to re-hydrate him when he needs it.

The smell this morning though was sickly and disgusting, Im finding it hard to get it out of the house, seems like its just hanging around.

Im quite worried about him, I know he's feeling hungry and crying because he wants to eat and play a little so Im feeling pretty bad for him right now :(

Just wondering if anyone has any tips on the next few days with him, helping him get back to his normal hyper self, we have another injection again tomorrow night with a check up so hopefully the rest and that will help.

Thankx

If he's not quite back to himself in the next day or two I'd take him back to the vet.

When we get young puppies with vomiting and diarrhea we usually keep them in hospital at least overnight until we can see the vomiting/diarrhea have stopped, then slowly introduce a wee bit of food and see how they take it, etc. Unless there are serious money concerns, we never just do a shot and tell owners not to feed them (it's a puppy! It can't go long without eating!)

However, I am not saying that your vet is stupid or that you have done anything wrong. I'm not trying to judge, I'm just saying that I've seen it handled in a different way.

That said, I would keep a close eye on your puppy, stay with him, keep him quiet and mellow. Do whatever you're allowed to do to keep him hydrated because diarrhea can be VERY dehydrating for wee little ones. I'd keep a really close eye on his stool. If you see blood in the stool at all I'd get him to the vet as soon as you're able.

Though you said you have a recheck tomorrow so they can give you more up to the minute advice when you see them. Just try to keep him quiet and resting if possible and let the vet know if you don't see any real improvement, or if his condition seems to get at all worse.

Parvo, that sounds dangerous??

We just took the crate apart and scrubbed the hell out of it and rinsed it all down, the place has started to smell slightly better with more windows open and a plug in air freshener.

He hasnt been sick since last night, think it was only 3 times he was sick, and his poo's aren't seeming that bad at the moment, Im hoping things are starting to pick up now.

He has drank some of his water with his re-hydration sachet in it and seems to be taking it fine, he wants to play a little but is sleeping a little more than normal.

Im very new to this so this whole situation is scaring the hell out of me because Ive never been through this!

So the plus sides is he hasnt been sick for a good while and this morning we have given him a handful of food since I wanted to test his tummy, he didnt seem to want it at first but we left it with him and he ate it all thankfully and kept it down.

With this Parvo virus, should I be getting even more worried even though his symptoms aren't to bad at the moment?

Thank you both for your replys xx

I had a parvo scare with my pup a couple of months ago. She was almost constantly vomiting and wouldn't eat or drink, but did not have diarrhea. My vet gave her an "anti-vomiting" shot (probably just dumbed down the name for me), a shot of antibiotics, and some antibiotic pills to give her twice a day for two weeks. He also told me to withhold food for the remainder of the day.

While the symptoms you listed do sound like symptoms for parvo, if he is improving and able to keep food/water down I think it's probably just a stomach virus. Mention it to your vet tomorrow, and he should be able to give you a definitive answer regarding parvo. Good luck, let us know what the vet says :)

Parvo is very nastey now, going around with dogs having shots too.

I would of thought the vet would of kept him with IV in him for fluids to make sure then in morning he might eat a tad bit.? Gosh I would be sick with worry.

Might give him a tsp of canned unspiced pumpkin, it is good for the tummy and digestion unless it is a disease. It might give him a pick up.? I keep it on hand and honey also. It is a great cleanser and heart tonic for dogs once a week given. The best to you and your pet.

Hi,

Well its 5am in the morning and Im up checking him, I can hear massive ammounts of gas and water rolling around in there, thats scaring me the most at the moment, but no more sick or even bad poo's today.

So before I go back to sleep Im going to give him something to drink as I hate to see him without anything, he tried eating a little grass outside as well, so Im hoping thats more helping and a good sign rather than anything else.

I wasnt with him when he went to the vet, it was my partner so Im not 100% sure really what he gave him, but Im going to try my best to get away from work tonight for this appointment, its at just after 7 this evening.

Im hoping that I will be able to try him on food after this as Im sure he thinks we hate him for not feeding him, I feel so so terrible.

Im just glad that theyres no more vomiting or diarrhea, he's still a little down, not really playful but wanting a cuddle etc...

Im so scared for this little boy my partner thinks Im going loopy.

So what do you think the likely hood of him having parvo virus is now looking at the fact that his stomach has settled over night and hasnt been sick since yesterday morning, he has had fluids and kept them down and I'll go give him a little bit more just before I go back to sleep.

My only real worry is the noises coming from his wee belly at the moment, Im thinking maybe its the lack of food? who knows hopefully the vet can tell me.

Anyway thank you so much for all your replys and concerns over my little one, I'll be sure to pop in after the vets tonight and let you know what he's said.

Thats me just given him some food, he didn't want it at first so I put it in the cage with him and he took it, I only gave him a small handful as the vet said dont feed him for 24hours and I havent so this is roughly 24hours, I just wish he would drink, he doesn't seem interested in it.

He's still pretty sleepy, not very playful and just generally down, scaring the hell out of his owner, wish he knew lol

So I guess we just have to wait until the vets tonight to find out what he thinks, but Im so not impressed with the way he is at the moment, he just doesn't seem his self at all.

Fingers crossed the food stays down and this might pick him up as 24 hours without food for a puppy is a long time.

Thankx again for your replys

Im almost sure Blake has parvo from reading about it on here, the fishy smell is something I remember, Im not going to be at the vets with my partner today because of work again, so Im hoping the vet wont say something like oh no it cant be that etc, but I'll make sure he mentions it, he has to come back tonight for more injections so I dont know if this is what the vet is working on at the moment, Im just not sure, but now Im even more worried, as he hasnt picked up much after the food I gave him, he just seems to be sitting there, not really wanting to play, but will if I kick a ball around, he has kept the food down thankfully but is that because of his injections yesterday afternoon? I just dont know.

Despite the fact that I am almost 100% sure that he might have it, is there a chance that the smell could have just been an upset tummy?

Heres the thing though thats hit the naiil on the head for me, our puppy has a VERY bad habbit of eating his own poo, spoken about with the vet he tells us its a puppy thing he will grow out of, but there are times when he is in the back garden and you dont catch him at it, he just goes to the loo, must think it smells of his food and injests it again, so Im not to sure what to do at the moment, I just want wee Blake to feel better.

I had a parvo scare, but have never had to actually deal with it. When Misty got sick, I did not notice any fishy smell. I'm pretty sure your vet can actually test for parvo (blood test I think?), so make sure your partner mentions it to him. I wish I could say I was sure it couldn't be parvo, but since I don't have first hand experience I can't :(

As for eating his own poop the best way to handle it is to just go outside with him while he does his business. Keep him leashed if the yard is too big and he runs off.

If he's not vomiting or having diarrhea anymore, I'd take that as a good sign though. Just keep doing what you're doing and hopefully the vet can put your mind at ease tonight :)

Hoping your little guy is feeling better!! I remember our family dog getting a stomach virus as a puppy...it wasn't parvo, but the vomit itself had a strong odor to it...hopefully that's all it was. Good luck at the vet!

I just had a parvo scare about a week ago with my Lab puppy. It turned out to be Giardia which is treatable with a pill for seven days. I hope your pup doesent have Parvo I lost a dog to it five years ago and we didn't realize she had it until it was too late. Yes his symptoms sound like parvo but it could also be other things like Hook Worms, Giardia, or a number of other things.

Hi everyone,

Ok so he has been to the vet for his other injection, he also gave him antibiotics to take, 2 twice a day until they are finished, I also asked to get some worming tablets so them as well for after he is feeling alot better and can keep them down.

We have started to re-introduce food, only about 1/4 of what we usually feed him and he is woolfing it down, Im SO SO over the moon I can not even put it into words how happy I am to be watching him eat and drink.

I also took him out for a walk as my partner said he had been quite jumpy and full of life when he was helping him do the garden (more getting in the road but he thought he was helping haha)

So I guess with no more sick he is getting better, when we took him out for his walk he went for a poo and it wasnt anymore diarrhea but little solid them mush and a funny dark green colour but Im going to take this as a good sign him getting it out his system.

Thank you so so so much everyone, you really have been fantastic, I just hope I can help you all as much as you have me
xxxxxxx

Actually, LB, I have to respectfully disagree with you. MANY puppies eat stool when they are in the whelping box, and at young ages before they are weaned.

This is a remnant of a survival mechanism in wild canids. It keeps the den area cleaner and less likely to attract other animals.

And most puppies DO outgrow this. The ones who do not need careful supervision and immediately removal of the h'or deuves. ;) :D
