I agree Dekka-

Anyways personally I equate parents who feed their kids Doritos and Mc Donalds every day (yes there are tons that are feeding crap every day) border line abusive as the kids as they have no choice (only what is bought for them) and even if thin and active it is still not a healthy diet to sustain ones life on in a healthy manner...therefore I consider feeding crap to a dog (who also cannot choose) is also border line abusive especially if you can do research on here, on other websites, with nutritionists, with dog trainers and breeders and still choose to make the wrong choice.

Simply put when you have the information in front of you and it is overwhelming--to make the other choice is worse than if you didn't know and were doing it.

I'm absolutely not lying when I say we fed our dogs crap like Alpo growing up--and they lived 'fine' to old age ect--but knowing what I know now (from being on Chazhound and meeting the educated set of folks we have here as well as doing my own independant research) I would be a fool to feed my pets Alpo--.

Sure there are discussions about what is better for some dogs--Innova or Eagle Pack or Raw vs premium food--but none of those people think that Pedigree is appropriate and would never feed it.

Anyways in closing I think you have to do what is best for your pets. If that means knowing that the food is crap compared to something else you can get than so be it--just don't expect people to understand why.......

now i am border line abusive??? because i choose to feed my dogs Pedigree??? girlbuffalo1 you said that growing up you feed your dogs Alpo UNTIL you got on here, so up until then you were feeding them the foods you are now saying are NOT good.. well, that is a double standard in my books, look i am not on here to start anything, but, i do not think that because i feed my pups Pedigree that i am border line abusive?? you know that is more of a personal attack, and that for one is NOT right... i am not saying, nor did i say that i was going to FOREVER feed my pups Pedigree that i am abusive to them... THE VET and every proffessional i have met ( including pro's), have said that they love pedigree and trust others.. PERIOD!!! say what you will but my pups are healthy and very much leading a wonderful life...

i never came on here a personally attacked anyone, nor have i ever, it just seems that i find myself defending my choices on here more than not.

i keep them in a 40 gal tank as well. WOW, this crowd just loves to pick out the worst in everyone, but, that is ok, i am sure you all have things you do that others do not agree with, but, you are perfect so be it.

wow again this is a monthly cost:
filters: 20
food:20
water conditioner:15
light bulbs:15 ( when needed)

Feed your dogs what you please. If you believe in it good for you, it's your choice, but please don't expect very passionate dog people to sit back quietly when you bring up a food that is bluntly made from garbage.

If you truly want to educate yourself on food ingredients please take the time to read this:http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=badingredients

After doing so, if you are still going with Pedigree than so be it...

Prime conditioner should last you a long time: $.50/month (averaged)
Turtle food is not that much/month: $5.00/month
Fruits/Veggies, I'll take $10: $10.00/month
Lights don't burn out that much: $2.00/month (averaged)
Test kits (you only have to buy these every once in a while): $.50/month

So a real estimate would be more on the $15-$20 range total/month and thats being liberal.

Nope, try again. I've kept saltwater aquariums for a while now and I don't spend near that much!

I'd guesstimate more like 10 dollars a month total for a 40 gallon goldfish tank.

Even though I don't use the stuff, I just looked up some info on Prime. A 500ml bottle treats 5,000 gallons of water. If you are doing 20 gallon water changes total biweekly that works out to 250 weeks that the bottle should last you. So, one $10 bottle should last you almost 5 years!!

If you're really using $20 worth of Prime a month, you should be doing somewhere in the range of 10,000 gallons of water changes a month. Man that must be a huge turtle tank!!

first off i have a 300 gal tank! the bottles that i get are good for aprox 1000 gals, i change my water 2 times a week. that= i capful for each 50 gals times 200 gals is= 4 capfuls per change that is aprox 1 bottle per week. tada.

veggies: i do not know where you shop, but for 4 turtles they eat their veggies and fruits 3-4 times a week, so therefore i need to spend at min 20.

lights are for heating source and cost
ZOO MED heat lamps last 2,000 hours, my RES need 10 to 12 hours per day 7 days a week do the math... they cost 12- 20 depending on wattage.

test kits: again i test my water weekly for all sorts of things( ammonia, chlorine etc) so therefore i buy these alot, any wel renouned turtle owner will tell you to test your water weekly.

I don't feel like arguing all of this, but the fact of the matter is that you're blowing all of your expenses out of proportion to justify the fact that you don't care about your dog's health.

No matter what you're spending on everything else, buying a high quality dog food will NOT cost you a substantial amount more than the crap you're feeding.

You know, you could really save yourself some money if you fed your dog cardboard. Since your dogs only get the best, you could spring for the special corrugated stuff!

This thread is going nowhere.

I don't get it.....I gave you places near you that sell a good quality food, Canidae which costs about $35 per 40 pound bag. If your dogs go through 2 40 pound bags a month (which is frankly kind of surprising) then you're only spending $70 a month on food for them. That's too much?

I have a customer that came in - she told me she fed Pedigree - I won't carry Pedigree. When I showed her the ingredients list online, she cringed and said "Oh my God, I can't believe I've been feeding my dog this crap. I thought Pedigree was a good food - I guess I should have looked at the ingredients".

She took home samples of Innova, Canidae, Nature's Variety and Fromm and is currently educating herself on ingredients and doing cost comparisons based upon how much of each food would be fed. She's amazed. A little bit of an open mind and a little bit of education on the subject can go a long way.

Look, if you want to feed Pedigree and be happy about it, do what you think you should do. If after reading the ingredients list, doing some research on your own, doing a true cost comparison yourself and understand the benefits of feeding a far better food you still feel it's right, or the best, to feed Pedigree, that's up to you, but, you're doing so knowing the potential repercussions of feeding such ingredients every day of your dog's lives.

Here's what I suggest - don't listen to anyone else, not even me (BTW, I own not only a pet supply store, but also a small dog food company). Do your own research on the ingredients in Pedigree and be open minded. Don't approach with a "I'm right" attitude, approach it with an open mind - you may save yourself some money and give your dogs a better diet all at the same time. Everyone wins. Research why people feel the ingredients are bad, what the long term effects of some of those ingredients are, research actual canine nutrition and what the needs of a canine are, do cost and feeding amount comparisons and when you're done, you don't even have to come back and tell us what you found, just act on what you've found.

Yes, we're all passionate about how we care for our animals, because we have researched, learned, and experienced some, at the least, of the repercussions of feeding a poor diet, over vaccinating, etc. We want to share with others what we've learned in hopes of helping at least one other dog, one other person. That's not a bad thing, and you truly shouldn't take offense to people's passions. You should embrace them, learn what you can, and if you don't want to learn more or change things for the better, walk away and leave it be.

I have a giant breed dog (and a small dog, for that matter). It's not at all uncommon for me to have numerous dogs under my roof - heck, at one point it was costing me near $1000/month to care for not only my dogs, but fosters as well, and that's not including my Newf's medical care. I feel your pain with the monetary end of things, but, a proper, healthy and wholesome diet is essential for the overall well-being of any animal, and that decreases my overall expense in their medical care.

Anyway, I don't really know why I bothered posting in a thread that's just going round and round, just hoping, I guess, to stop the madness in this thread and encourage people to really look at and learn about what they are feeding their pets..

Uh sorry, I just needed an answer, I didnt mean for my post to upset or make anyone angry, or start any fights :( Also, I forgot to mention With the beneful they sometimes get pumpkin and cuts of slightly cooked meats that I get from the butcher. (Lamb, Beef and sometimes fish.) We fed Sadie Purina and Beneful all her life and she is really healthy. Can I get a really good quality food from petco or petsmart? (right down the street from me) and around how much will it cost? Thanks
