hey everyone was just lookin around the internet and found this site; and was hoping that someone in here could help me out.
a friend of mine is giving me one of his pups out of his liter and i was wondering what kinda dog or if its even a known breed. the female was a pure bred siberian wolf and the male was a pure bred irish setter. what would that be considered or is there even a name for it. he has showed me a couple pics of the dogs and said according to his vet they are good healthy pups.

next question what would be the best way of training a dog like this, he is only 7 weeks old, but has anyone come up with an effective training technique? any help would be appreciated.
thanks
mike

First of all, welcome to Chaz!

Siberian wolf or siberian husky?

If it's a siberian husky, I'd say wait until the pup is about 10 weeks old before you get it from the mother. In the meantime, read up all the books you can about raising puppies. Puppies are a lot of fun, but a lot of work. A husky/setter mix will be very energetic, so be sure you can provide a lot of exercise.

If it's a wolf, or any kind of wolf hybrid, I'd give a big NO! Do not get a wolf, especially since it sounds like you're a first-time dog owner. Wolves, even wolf/dog mixes, are very different from domestic dogs. There are a lot of liability issues, they need an extremely experienced person do deal with them. Very few people can even provide adequate housing for a wolfdog, much less be knowledgeable enough to train one properly. I used to own one myself, and I know how difficult wolfdogs can be. I don't reccommend them as pets for any casual dog owner.

Hi fireguy! Welcome to Chaz!

No, it wouldn't be a 'breed' of dog. It would be a mix, but it sounds stunning. I would tend to agree with Gempress, if it is a wolf hybrid I might keep looking. I have known a few and they can be pretty unpredictable.
As far as training goes, make sure you look into puppy kindergarten classes once the vaccines are finished and look for a good trainer who is available to help with questions that WILL come up.
Husky's are bright dogs, Setters...not so much...Kind of a crazy mix.
Get a crate, that's the first thing to have on hand for puppy training. But don't abuse it. I have some of this info on my site if you want to see it.
Congrats!
(Encourage your friend to get them dogs fixed though! :) )

Just realize, puppies are like having babies, they get into EVERYTHING and dont exactly potty train themselves!! Just dont get upset over accidents, they dont have the muscle development to "hold it" yet even if they wanted to!! We bought one of those bissel little greens (something like that, its like a hand held carpet cleaner) and that thing works WONDERS! Id say get one of those too so you can thorougly clean up accidents :)
