Yes some counties have banned pit bulls. I know auburn has a list of like 10 dogs outlawed. Call the local humane society or shelter they will know.:)

WHY do you want one??

In Yakima several years ago 2 pitbulls killed an elderly man in his wheelchair, the dogs owners weren't held liable cause it happened just outside the city limits. Everytime I think of that poor man I feel sick.

Many years ago in Montana I watched 2 Pitbulls fight-I'll NEVER forget that sight!

My rescue dog,Rags, survived a 30 minute attack @ the shelter by a Pitbull recently brought in & not neutered yet,the dog climbed the fence to get at Rags. They had to kill the dog to get him off Rags.

I'm beginning to hate the sight of those dogs, and I'm not alone in feeling that way. It's the PEOPLE that should be banned. There are areas in Skagit County where as many as 5-6 Pitbulls roam as a pack. My son lost one of his dogs to 2 Pitbulls jumping the fence,if you'd seen what they did you might think about getting a different breed.

Also know of way too many young people getting these dogs & leaving them in crates all day or tied up, not getting training or even bothering with routine vet checks, neuter, etc.

Of course ANY dog can be aggressive, and I DO know of very sweet, well behaved Pit Bulls. I just wonder why you want one?

Well I can tell you why I have two and think (IMHO) they are the best breed of dog.

They are the sweetest most easy going dogs I have ever been around. They are very comical and very loving. They are ultra-loyal and devoted to their owners. They are the perfect size. They don't bark much. They are very active when its time to be and very mellow when its time to be. They have nice short hair. They love children and are very forgiving of rough children. They have more patience with others than any CREATURE (humans included) on earth I could go on and on.....

If you raise them in a loving and caring home they are unmatchable (IMHO) as companions.

Whatever breed you own I could ask the same question. You most likely would have wonderful things to say about your breed or dog. Some of us find it insulting when people cast a shadow on our breed by saying "why would anyone want one". That question I believe is born out of a lack of knowledge on the problem. It is the PEOPLE not the DOGS. I am not sure why more people can see that. Maybe because they don't want to acknowledge the evil that is in their own species.

We should be asking the question, "Dear Government offical, why do you continue to allow millions of dogs to be neglected, abused and tortured every year" or "Why do you allow human trash to own dogs or any pet after they have shown many times they have no desire to take care of or have compassion for their dogs."

Pit Bull are not for everyone because they require the same devotion from their owners that they give (Few Humans can come close to matching).

RtR-- this post is not a slam on you but rather a response to some of the points you made and questions that you asked. Bill O'Rielly asked the same question on his show; it was a Rhetorical question that was meant as a slam. I don't think you meant it that way but some people ask the question with that meaning.

Good response!

Thanks, and NO I didn't mean it as a slam-God forbid I EVER mimmick Bill O!!!!

I'm new here & have noticed how many YOUNG people there are on this site, I was trying to get across a point cause I've noticed how many Pit Bulls end up in our local shelter.

ANY breed that is high energy & smart, needs ALOT of thought & research before adopting/buying.

I'm agreeing 100% about Pit Bulls being sweet & loyal.

Just want to discourage anyone that's not going to dedicate themselves to the responsibility/liability issues to think twice.

Maybe it's cause we have such a huge rural area here & so many meth labs-or just a high proportion of nitwits, I'm not sure, but the breed is becoming a problem HERE. Again, it's not the dogs' fault, I'd like to see these owners put in a cage @ the shelter!

I can't even visit my son with Pit Bull neighbors. His dog was killed with his Rhottie in the yard!! My other son has a Dobie, they were once bad-repped also, his dog is sweet as any dog could be.

And with all the horror stories out there,I keep wondering why the black Lab tore off that woman's face in France (I think)?

You make an excellent point RagstoRiches... pit bulls are a very popular dog in urban areas...but now even in suburban really... alot of people get these dogs without doing their research and its very true, they end up giving them away to shelters because they didn't realize how much training and exercise they need.

Its definately not a dog for everyone...they are demanding but wonderful if you commit...:)

Can you imagine had that story been about a Pit Bull ripping her face off? Dogs attack Humans and other animals every day, its just that Pit Bulls get the press and headlines.

In that story you had to hunt to find out it was a Lab, had the dog been a Pit Bull that would have been the first thing they said. I can just imagine the first reporter on the scene saying "Hmmm are you sure thats not a Pit Bull? No really I think its a Pit Bull, what do you mean it would be dishonest to call it a Pit Bull. Its Black and I have seen Black Pit Bulls....thus it must be a Pit Bull....."

That Lab tore her face off most likely because she was doing something crazy. She was sooo wacked out on drugs she didn't realize her face was ripped open until she went to light a smoke and her upper lip was gone   . I can't even imagine being that out of it!

Where I live the pitbull ban is on, and within two months of the pitbull ban there was a story in the newspaper on staff named Lexi. She was found in an alley way almost dead. She ended up having a leg amputated and spent a few months under intense care. The culprit of her serious injuries?!?!?
A huskie. I just thought it was great publicity, of course I felt sorry for her, but at the same time it takes incidents like those for people to truly understand that not all pitbulls are aggressive and vicious..
Just thought I'd add that to the anecdotes.

I don't know. I don't mind the breed. I do however, mind them running loose.

(Actually I hate it when any dog is loose and comes after me or my dogs...)

They are a breed that needs supervision due to their strong prey drive. I have been attacked by this breed 3 times this year alone out here in spokane and my patience is wearing thin on that!!!!

On the other hand I just rescued one back in Jan and rehomed her and she was an absolute doll!! So perfect in the house. Never could figure out why she had been dumped..

Could the THAT be the people who let them loose? Punish them! The laws are already in place to punish them and/or make those laws stronger. Its not the dogs fault some idiot owns them.

no way to tell, really, if they'll be banned any time soon or ever. the way it's going, though, the picture is pretty grim, unfortunately. and the more they ban them, the more bad*ss their image becomes, and the cycle just repeats and repeats.

they're *certainly* not the right breed for everybody. they require a lot more work, training, and responsibility than a number of the breeds out there. it's harder to rent with a pit bull. it's hard to get homeowner's insurance with a pit bull. and you get NO room for error. zero. and your errors can have extremely far-reaching effects. you screw up and pit bulls could be banned in the entire state.

i love this breed. i have two, both dogs i got as adults who were picked up as strays by animal control before i got them. but they are in no way easy dogs. not even my "easy" dog is truly easy.

luce is my first pit bull. she's 3 1/2 now. she's extremely athletic, requires hard exercise every single freaking day, is dog-aggressive, is extremely prey-driven, is a fence-breaker and escape artist, and rabble-rouser in general. she's been through six sets of obedience classes so far. i love her with all my heart and soul, but i know in the hands of a lot of people, she'd have gotten herself in big trouble by now.

just make sure you know what you're getting into before you bring one home.

I have never been bitten by a pit bull (except the one I had when I was 5. I tried to pull out his whisker though LOL). However, I have been ATTACKED on several occasions by golden retrievers. I would put my life in the paws of a pit bull before I ever put it in the grasp of a golden -- but how many people would do that, really, with the amount of bad publicity the pit bull already has. Whenever I say I was bitten by a golden, people tell me that it couldn't have been a golden. It must have been mixed with something aggressive, like german shepherd. I grew up with shepherds, the best **** dog I ever had was a shepherd. People tell me that I must not remember my pit bull well, as all pit bulls turn on their owners, and mine never did. Honestly, I'm breedist against the breeds that DON'T get discriminated against. We go through a new breed every decade, if the pit bull doesn't become extinct from bans, it will soon be forgotten and a new breed will take over. It will never end. My own breed is banned in several places.

The only report I found about a Lab "attacking" a woman in France was the one that got a face transplant. All it said was that the Lab was trying to wake her up by clawing and biting at her face. I'd like to see the full, original article.

Part of the whole issue is attacks by Labs don't make the news and if they do they are often called "Pit Bulls".

Several years ago there was a story of a Pit Bull attacking a kid and when they posted a picture of the dog is was a yellow lab!

Ok, well I still would like to see the news article. I'm not saying any breed is worse or better because of the "attack" frequencies. Any dog that attacks a person or other dog has either not been trained, bred poorly, made to be agressive or abused. It's the owners fault. IMO, if you can get a Lab or a dachsund to attack you then an owner (or breeder) definitely did something wrong. Yes, I think the same for all breeds, but some breeds were originally more "agressive" than others. Some breeds were bred to be happy-go-lucky family dogs/swimmers/retrievers and others were bred to "bring down bulls" or some such thing.

Now if it was a pit bull the headline would read PIT BULL RIPS OFF OWNER'S FACE, but since it was a lab they feel no need to exagerate the point. Makes me sick!!!

I never said it wasn't a Lab, but why wasn't her story in a regular article. That's one about her face being restored and stuff. You'd figure with a bite like that she'd have had news reporters all over trying to get that story.

-She said that she was wrestling with personal problems at the time, had had a trying week, and "took some drugs to forget," which knocked her out, The Associated Press quoted her as saying.

Dinoire said she was passed out when the dog bit her and that she didn't realize the extent of her injuries when she awoke.-

I'm assuming no one else was at home when this happened. It's amazing that she took THAT many drugs to where she didn't wake up while being bitten. I mean, how long was she out? Was the dog going hungry? Was she "thrashing around" while unconscious and hitting the dog accidentally? Was she even really unconscious? All we have is a drug addict that says she was bitten by her pet Lab but there are no witnesses, she doesn't know why it happened and didn't notice it when she awoke. Gee, sounds real reputable.
1. She was unconscious. How does she know her dog did it?
2. Why isn't she in jail for having that many drugs? Or is that allowed in France?
3. She's got 2 kids. Where were they? How old are they? Are you sure they didn't do something to make the dog want to attack? Are you sure the kids didn't "attack" her for some reason?
4. There still is no newspaper article about it. It's a medical article mentioning what supposedly happened. I find it amazing that a story that big didn't make it into a newspaper.

:( In my city there are far more bites delivered by other more popular breeds. Yes, goldens and labs do bite if their social heredity is allowed to slip.
I think the point needs to be made though is that the degree of damage is where the difference lies. I too love many, not all, pits that I have met and trained. One big problem I see here, particularly with pitbull rescue but also just general public ignorance, is that people minimize the capabilities of the breed in an attempt to lessen the pit hysteria. Unfortunately it encourages people who should not own these dogs to really want one. One very big reason, IMO, that this breed is in so much trouble. Yes, they are among the most loving and devoted family dogs I've met but when things do go wrong (usually, but not always, due to stupid humans), the consequences can be, and more often than not are, absolutely devastating.

I get especially angry when I hear someone with no experience with the breed (often first time dog owners), talk about them as if they're like any other dog. They're not. They're wonderful in the right hands, often dangerous when running loose or in the wrong hands.

Like a few pit owners posted, this is not a breed for everyone. Only people with an understanding of their strength, high prey drive, and the fact that they are "finishers", should ever be allowed to own one of these unique creatures. That is the only way to save this breed.
