I was only able to work Otto for about 5 minutes or so yesterday, but I guess that is definitely better than nothing.

Training session with Jesse didn't go very well. He decided he didn't care about the food rewards and that his bed was much more inviting. I did manage to get in a session last night though when he was desperate for what was on my plate at dinner. LOL So I saved some treats from that and had a go.

He wasn't good. He doesn't sit with his front legs relatively straight, they're stretched out so far in front of him that he can't help but slide down onto the floor. Then he just lies there and waits for the next treat. :( It's very frustrating. I have no idea what to do. *sigh*

Well Chloe is doing really well :D Sometimes after she sits she will just go ahead and lay down since she knows thats coming next but we are almost there. I dont have to touch the ground now at least. I just have to point and say down :D

Maddie ~ loose-leash walking.
We're doing Excellent! She knows what it means, so yesterday I did a refresher course and today I started on doing it with mild (indoor) distractions [little brothers are good for something, lol]

Missy ~ a solid sit.
We're doing... okay... She understands that sit means but your butt on the ground, but she pops right back up as soon as she does it. Her weight never shifts off of her feet. If I could find something that would really motivate her so I can use it as a lure until she 'gets' it, it would be so much easier!

Carly ~ a longer stay.
We're doing good. Just refreshing her mind, and extending the stays 10 more seconds longer than I know she can do it for.

Ok, so in addition to the dumb bell work this week, my dog has also learned to gait with the bike. :D

Zeus is doing better on his long stay. We managed 3 minutes today, but my goal is 10. The only problem with teaching him a long stay is that is I can only do it 2 or 3 times before his attention span expires. I guess I need to make him start doing it more throughout the day.

Wow, sounds like everyone is doing well and having fun with this :). lol I think I picked a bad week for me, I was recovering all day today from the dentist visit yesterday so spent most the day lying in bed :(. I'm hoping tomorrow will be a great day and I'll be feeling better so I can get out and get in some sessions! Or if it's not, maybe I'll work on something else for the rest of the week like our puppy pushups.

Cassiepeia~ It's great you were able to find a treat (your leftovers lol) to at least get him motivated. It helps if you do a session right before he eats or at his dinner time so you know he's hungry. Maybe you just need to start from square 1 with him. Did you try luring him? Or maybe you could try capturing, does he sit on his own often? If not, it could be uncomfortable for him or something. Make sure he can physically do it / it doesn't hurt him. As long as all that's okay, if you keep the treat right above his head where he looks up to the treat, he plants his butt, Mark that with a YES! or a clicker and give him the treat. Do that a few times. If you keep the treat at his nose, he should stay sitting for a little longer. If you reward that a lot, he should start catching on that sitting is also a good thing and he doens't always have to lay down. Hope this helps a little bit.

Brittina88~ With Missy, your using a toy right? At first, I'd mark the second her but hits the floor, then toss they toy. Do 3-5 reps of this. Now hold off a second longer, if she pops up say Nope or another no reward marker and wait. Just stand there, if she sits again, mark that and toss the toy. Repeat this again 3-5 times, she should start just sitting a little longer instead of popping back up. If she sits for even a second longer than before, mark that and reward her. If this doesn't work for you, let me know and I'll give ya another way you could do it :).

gaddylovesdogs~ We'd love to have you join us! It's not too late, you just won't get as much time as the others did. Of course you can still work on it as much as you want lol.

RedyreRottweilers~ Awesome, sounds like your making a lot of progress!

Gempress~ Sounds like your doing great! Maybe you just need to make it a little more interesting for Zeus (Lovely name by the way!). Are you making it variable? So sometimes you have him stay for a min. sometimes 30 seconds, sometimes 2 min. sometimes 1 min. and 15 seconds...etc...? If you do this, it helps a lot. Remember to work in small steps and not to go too long before your dog is ready :). (Not saying you aren't already doing all of this or you didn't know this already lol, I'm just saying in case you didn't. It sounds like you and Zeus are doing great!)

Again, glad to have everyone participating! How did day 2 and 3 go for everyone? If you are having trouble or have questions or seem to be stuck, ask away! I'd be more than happy to help! Thanks

Yay for Chloe! Congradulations :). Is she still anticipating it? You should mix up the commands, sit, down, stand.. or what ever, helps if you use 3. Don't do any in a certain pattern, make sure the dog doesn't know which one you'll do next. Then say each one and reward her when she does the right one. No reward if she does it wrong (As long as she knows each one). This will get rid of her anticipating things and she'll begin to wait for you to give her the command instead of doing it on her own. You'll also need to work on it in different environments to generalize it :). Again congrats!

I will work on Hannah's stay. I want to be able to put her in either a down stay or sit stay while we are eating and not have to worry about her keep getting up and begging and bothering us. We may have guests over eventually and we don't want her doing that to any of them.

You cannot teach your dog to heel by saying heel when it is not heeling. You are then telling the dog the wrong definition of heel. She cannot hear this word if she is NOT heeling.

Therefore, you must TEACH the heeling before you can SAY heel.

A class is likely a very good idea for the THREE of you, you, the dog, AND your GF.

Hey guys! How'd things go for today? I finally got in a session! Yay for me! I decided to do it this morning before doing everything else, good thing too, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to once again today. So right now she is doing an average of 3 steps of heeling and giving attention to me. Hopefully I'll get in another session tomorrow and we'll work on getting to 4-5 steps. It'll be nice if I can get in more than just 1 session, but we have a lesson with one of our clients tomorrow so I'll be gone most the day. Hope it's good out tomorrow! lol.

Julifurry~ If you are going to do a stay while you are eating or what ever, I'd recommend the down stay. It's uncomfortable for most dogs to sit for very long and it'd be unfair to the dog to expect him/her to sit through a whole meal. So a down stay would be better for that situation :) just thought I'd let you know.

Calibra~ I do agree with RedyreRottweilers, you need to teach the dog to heel before adding the cue/command to it. What are you trying to do to teach the heel?

yeah we are doing the down stay. It's going pretty good. Hannah must have ADD or something :D. She will go down and stay for a couple minutes and then want to get up and go to the other side of the table so I have to catch her before she starts getting up and say "no, stay" and then she'll stay agian but keep trying to get up. Tonight I had a treat sitting on the table, during dinner, and she was either tired or now knows what I expect of her because I put her in a down stay and she went to sleep. After me and my daughter were done eating I gave her the treat for being so good.

Sounds like your doing good with her Julifurry! Keep up the great work :). Try rewarding before she gets up, so if she gets up at the 2 min. mark, reward her at 1 min. and 45 seconds. Then build up. That will help a lot. What you are doing is good as well, though you want to make her as successfull as possible rather than letting her fail. :) Good job! And good luck :). Only... 3 days left! Anybody think they will meet their end goal by Sunday?

Awesome Jess2416! You guys sound like you are doing great as well! *Tosses Cookies to Everyone* lol

I do tell her good girl every so often if she is laying really nicely but everytime you show her any attention she will get up and want to push her nose on you for attention so usually I will say "good stay, hannah" and that way she knows she's being good but she is still suppose to stay. I hope to meet the goal by sunday but the real test will be when we actually have company, that seems to be when she "forgets" all the commands that I have taught her and she acts like a wild maniac.

Well when you reward her, you should walk over and give her a treat, tell her good girl then say stay again then walk away (Kind of like what you've been doing already). As for the company, make sure not to push her too far too fast. Make sure she is ready for that level of distraction before expecting her to do it. You might have to start from square one. It might be a better idea at this point in her training (Unless she's ready of course) to put her away for that night while you have company over or while your eating, then set up a time where people come over just for a training session where you can concentrate just on training her and letting her know she has to also listen while company is over. Just a suggestion :).
