Friday, about 4:00 we were getting ready to close up and go home. Then the phone rang. It was the humane society. They just picked up this cocker in HORRIBLE shape. They called and wanted to know if we would groom it. Of course we really didnt want to do it right then, but do to circumstances, if we didnt do it then, the poor dog would have to wait for 5 days.

They brought in this thing that was suppose to be a dog. It was a very heavy solid mat. It even had some sort of vegitation growing in its mats. The poor dog's ears were extremly heavy from the mats. This dogs ears were about 10 times more thick then they were suppose to be (because of mats), or even thicker than that.

This girl was such a sweetie. We were scared that she would have to be sedated to get groomed from her horrible condition. but she did great. It took an hour of careful shaving before we could get her in the bath. Poor girl was caked in flea dirt under all of those mats. she was covered in fleas. her feet were so matted and her toes were so matted I am not sure how long it has been since she has felt ground under her feet. there was at least two inches of matts under her feet! She was so dirty we couldnt tell what color she was!

Her ears is what is the most horrible part. about half way down the ear she started becomeing aggressive. We figured some bad skin would be under the worst part of her ear mats. and we were right. Her ear tips have basically rotted off, and she had a major infection! pus was oozing, it smelt horrible and it was awful! We called the vet and she told us to put proxide on it, and then tell the shelter to bring her in tomorrow (Sat.) morning and she will look at it. From how the vet talked the poor cocker will probably lose about half of her ears.

We got the good girl all groomed up. We put a cute Christmas bandana on her and she was ready to go. We let her roam around the shop for a while. She was cautious but still sweet. She was so worn out from her ordel, she layed down and slept until the lady from the animal shelter came to pick her up. as she laid there, my boss and I reflected and had a very hard time with what we just seen. at least now she is groomed, and vetted by now.

We DID take pictures, and I will try to get them posted as soon as I can. they are on my bosses camera, and I imagine she will put them online on Tuesday.

Just had to share! It took 2 and 1/2 hrs to get this dog all groomed. She ended up being a red and white cocker with adorable red freckles on her nose :)

Wow, I hope you have before AND after pictures, that must have been an amazing transformation. I can't even fathom what she must have felt like after that groom. Kudos to you!!

To have the proper tools for that must have been a blessing. Thank goodness you stayed for her.

I home kharma pays a visit to the person that let this animal get in this condition.

:hail: I know she appriciates all of your time and effort -- I know first hand how difficult it can be to undo the damage like this on a cocker coat. I can't wait to see pics - I was reading your post, and a lump was rising up in my throat. And amazingly enough, these dogs seem to appriciate it the most, and seem better behaved than the spoiled ones who can be snappy :(

Was she a stray?

I think she was a stray.

I am thinking that this cocker will always hate having her ears shaved. It hurt her to shave them. they were litterly rotten, and had raw red skin. When she gets groomed again i bet she will remember how bad that hurt and will act up for her ears. I hope not.

but she was good for her grooming to be a cocker (no offense! cockers are just honestly the dogs we have the most trouble with trying to bite us!)

That's so sad. I'm glad you could help her. Every groomer who complains about cockers makes me think the only ones they ever see are badly bred ones.

its a HUGE possibility here. We have two huge amish puppy mills. They dogs either came from there, or the dogs parents did.

Eww. I'd think that would have a lot to do with it. The breed isn't so popular here. They are rarely in shelters. There are enough badly bred ones around, but it seems less than many places more south. Lot of people I know hadn't met cockers till mine as there is fewer to meet.

The poor cocker! The story sounds familiar to a cocker I groomed last spring. He was a rescue who needed to be cleaned up before he could be homed. He was the sweetest boy even though he had obviously come from the most awful situation. I LIKE grooming cockers, the only bad thing that I can really say about them is that they leave the most awful hair splinters! The dogs that I find to be the most tempermental and likely to bite on the table are shih tzu's, we have a crazy amount of BYB's producing these in my area. I always love grooming a well bred one, the difference in temperment is amazing!

Ouch, yes I've gotten hair splinters in my feet before

It sort of sounds like the more common (popular?), BYBs or mills breeds in your area are the ones that give the groomers the hardest time? That'd be an interesting poll!
Here, I refuse to clip a doxies nails! lol!

I can't wait for pics either! ;)

doxie nails!!! oh no!
we cringe when one comes it. I put on a large rubber apron because the doxies and chis love to scream, poop, and pee while trying to bite us for the nail trim.

You did a wonderful thing for that poor dog. I'll be helping out a local shelter with some grooming today. I'll post before and after pics when I get a chance.
