Kelly's old dog has diarrhea with blood and bad smell.,,the smell is less now, not as strong as yesterday..she is 17..there is more blood then yesterday. No fever, no vomitting she wants to know if it is ok to give pedialyte to a dog..have called around but no one really is sure? If it is a virus..dont want to take to the vet just yet and money is tight and a trip to the vet is very traumatic for her. Scary when you are blind and deaf. She is very comfortable in her own little space..take her out and it is not good for her.

forgot to mention that she is calling the vet on wheels just in case this is Queenies end..she knows that organ failure can cause blood as well..the dog is a jack russel terrier and very special to her. i got the answer to my own question but will post incase anyone else wants to know..yes pedialyte is fine..and info on this..if it is a bug it usually passes thru in about 48 hours and the charges of the mobile vet are 45 to come out and 45 to euthanize (sp?) so i figure other mobile vets are about along those lines

pedialyte is fine. it can really make a difference. if there is prolonged bleeding, i'd definitely consult a vet tho.

I gave pedialyte to Chiclet, my rabbit, when she was sick. She loved it - apple flavoured. I think it prolonged her life a little.

I don't know if you guys know this, but if you're dog is dehydrated (I'm assuming this is the reason for pedialyte) and having trouble holding water down there is something else you can do. My puppy, Drellie, was extremely dehydrated about 2 months ago. She was throwing up and had diarrhea and wouldn't eat or drink anything. The vet suggested she may have parvo. I had taken her to the vet on Friday morning and the vet told me to bring her back on Saturday if there was no improvement. By Friday evening, Drellie was comatose. She wouldn't even lift her head when I walked into the room. My mother told a friend of hers who called me and told me to get a nose syringe (used to suck snot from babies) or baby enema and fill it with water. Then you squirt that in the dogs rear. I thought that it would cause my dog to have diarrhea, but my friend told me that the colon absorbs water fastest. Well, I gave my baby her first dose at 11:30 pm. She didn't budge, struggle or move. 15 minutes later she got the second dose and she was struggling. I continued giving her 1 or 2 doses every hour and by 5:30 am, she was up and walking around. She was eating and holding food down by 2:00 pm and back on the road to health. I have no doubt that rehydrating her in that way saved her life.

BTW, my friend's mother is a quaker and will not go to doctors. When her mother was dying, my friend did the same thing to her and saved her life, as well.

Oh, one other thing. When you get the syringe, you may want to coat it with KY to keep it from hurting so much. Also, make sure you get the air out before you insert it.
