My father-in-law asked me to find my mother-in-law a toy poodle as a surprise gift (she's been hinting around for one).
While looking in the local newspaper, I came across a "parti poodle" (white with black markings on the face and body). They also come in other colors. I have never even heard of these before. I looked them up on the internet and thought they were just precious! I fell in love with the look of them, so I sent a deposit to the breeder. I just hope she's happy with it and likes the way it looks. I hate picking out a dog for somebody!!!

Giving a pet as a present is the worst idea.

Mainly because the person getting the pet dosen't know what to do with it or dosent want it, so it gets taken to the humane society.

I think if your mother in-law really wanted a dog she should wouldn't have hinted around for one, and actually gotten her dog herself, and your father in-law shouldn't have sent you out to look for one... he should've done the dirty work himself.. lol :p

I hope your mother in-law likes her present and keeps her present too. :)

I found a breeder a few towns away. She didn't have her own site. I just randomly "googled" parti poodle for some pics.
Anyway, she's been breeding for years and guarantees it's health. The pups are ckc registered and will have had first shots and worming. They will be ready in a couple of weeks. I just took her word for being reputable:yikes:
The reason my father-in-law didn't take care of it is 'cause he's in the last stages of cancer:( and can't do much of anything anymore. Besides he knows nothing about dogs.He doesn't even like dogs! He knows that I know more about them since I always owned them, which is why he asked me.
I have a funny feeling that I will end up with the dog if it doesn't work out:)

I would also be interested to see one.
Is this a Designer Dog? I never heard of it either.

Sorry but I have to disagree with you in that it is the worst idea. I know people who have gotten dogs as gifts and those dogs were wanted and loved just as much as a dog they would have picked out themselves. If not more because someone that loves them brought the dog into their lives.
For sample, our family gave my grandmother her dog Muffin. I can honestly say that she loved that dog more than any other dog she ever had. After having Muffin for 15 years, she had to have her put to sleep a couple of years ago and she is still as heart broken as the day it happened.
If a responisble dog loving person is hinting around about wanting a dog, I say give them the gift of unconditional love. :)

CKC as in canadian kennel club or CKC as in Continental kennel club? because if it's the later get your money back and run like hell. they are NOT reputable and the ONLY people who register dogs with the ConKC are lousy breeders who are not breeding for the right reasons or with the necessary care.

there ARE reputable parti breeders out there, but they're few and far between. most likely the one you've found is not.

please please get your money back for this puppy and do not buy a dog as a gift. dogs NEED to be chosen by the people with whom they're to live. they are a huge responsibility and live (small poodles especially) for 10-15 years.

Elegy beat me to it . . . If the breeder is in the US, this could well be the Continental Kennel Club. Bleeeh!

Why don't you tell you mother-in-law that you will pay X amounts for a dog and let her pick one out? The person who's going to live with the dog should really be the one picking it out.

I'd run far, far away.

But what about the people who don't have a happy ending? The one's who get the dog - even though they hinted or said they wanted a dog - and then it turns out neither get along or it's not the one s/he wanted?

Whoever the dog is for, THEY need to choose. They need to spend time with the dog, see if it would be a good fit in their home, and then make the decision. It's not someone else's choice regardless of how well they know the person... after all they won't be living with it.

So I say get a stuffed Poodle with an IOU note and get in touch with an EXCELLENT breeder or rescue, both of you do your research.

Will go back into lurk mode now :)

i just wanted to say, i love this. i've also heard of people buying a really cute collar/leash with an IOU.

i would never want somebody to pick out a dog for me. dogs are as individual as the people owning them.

I want to second Elegy - that's how it has been done in my family for ages if someone either asked for a pet as a gift, or it was a surprise.

It was either a stuffed animal, or a card with a nice photo, plus a book about proper care and a "gift certificate" for the type of pet.

I'm not paying for the dog. Well, I did mail the deposit, but my father- in-law will pay me back. He's just too sick to do all of this himself.
I agree 100% that my mother-in-law should be the one to pick out the dog herself if she wants one that bad. I know I wouldn't want anyone picking my dog for me.
He just knows that his time is running out and he doesn't want her to be "lonely".
Now, I feel even worse about all this than before. I'm not sure if the ckc is canadian or continental. I had no idea there was more than one. I also had no idea that continental wasn't any good. I paid the deposit so the puppy could be held for me, but I was planning on checking it out thoroughly when I went to pick it up to make sure it was healthy. I figured if I wasn't satisified she would have to give my deposit back. Right? I mean she can't keep the puppy and the deposit.
Thanks for all of you guys info. I wish I would have inquired about it before taking any steps. He just wanted me to get one asap.
