First off, are you sure you're ready for a dog? Have you done much research on them, their attention requirements, their lifespans etc? A small dog can live up to 20 years.

It doesn't sound like you want any breed in particular.. How about going to your local animal shelter and checking out the small dogs that they have there?

Not to criticise but for info. why are you re-homing one and getting another ?

Rat Terriers are terriers. They are very intelligent, energetic and some can be a little quick to snap or bite if provoked, though I wouldn't call any breed "mean".
I'd definitely check out the dogs at the shelter - you may find the perfect match there :)

Well, if these dogs don't work out I would recommend researching the Papillon. Fantastic little dogs for an active lifestyle, they are very intelligent and most are pretty happy-go-lucky little guys. The ones I have worked with (besides my own.. who I am convinced is demon spawn in a pap suit) have been very responsive and fun to train.

The reason I asked is that the breeds you are leaning toward require activity and lots of work in trainning as they are stubborn. Very intellegent and will try to have things their way. They are on my list of " BURGER KING DOGS" you know have it your way??? lol . I have 2 ACDS they are " BURGER KING DOGS " too.
I hope you get a great companion and have a good long and loving relationship no matter what breed you get. I think a Lab mix would be good for you.

I just wanted to say YAY FOR YOU! You're only 13 and you have the right idea already! BEFORE getting a pup, research to find the best one for you. So many adults haven't even gotten that one figured out! ;) So kudos for that! :)

I don't know much about small breeds.. but many people here do and you'll find some really great advice! Good luck finding you're new forever friend!

ooh rat terriers. i've got one spunky one myself. she's not very social, like she'll go up to people and be like oooh pet me, but is tolerate. well when she wants to anyways. she's very affectionate to me though.
here's some pics.
