Now I know this is a dog food forum but I just HAVE to post what is in the "free bag" of Science Diet Kitten food I got today at the vet's. First, when he brought the bag out I said NO WAY! I am not feeding any cat of mine that crap! Now he laughed because we have known each other for 20 years and he knows I know it's crap. He says, well it's free. I said fine I will give it to strays. Are you ready for these ingredients?

Of course you aren't but here they are anyways.

Chicken-by-product Meal, ground whole grain corn, animal fat, corn gluten meal, brewer's rice, chicken liver flavor, fish oil, flaxseed, dried egg product, potassium chloride, soybean mill run (WTF??), DL-Methoinine, choline chloride, calcium carbonate, L Lysine, vitamins (L ascorbyl2 polyphosphate, vitamin E supplement, Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate, vitamin A supplement, calcium pantothanate, riboflavin, biotin, pyrodoxine hydrochloride, vitamin B12 supplement, folic acid, vitamin D3 supplement), vitamin E supplement, taurin, iodized salt, minerals (ferrous sulfate, zinc oxide, copper sulfate, manganous oxide, calcium iodate, sodium selenite, L-triptofan,magnesium oxide, L Arganine, beta carotine, rosemary extract.
Is this stuff great or what?:yikes: :yikes:

Wonder why its recommended by many vets huh??? Doesnt take a nutritionist to know its crappy food.
Sadly many people believe its "good wholesome kibble"
Poor cats and dogs... it should be illegal to sell such an inferior product IMO.

Oh yeah, I have a tic that develops every time I look at a bag of SD, be it cat or dog. Actually, I about had a coronary the other day when I was looking at the "Ultra-Allergen Free" version of the z/d (there is "low" and "ultra" apparently. Anyway, that stuff on has 14% protein in it! And at the same time, the dogs are eating tins of Ceasar, the stuff with the westie on the lid...it just boggles my mind as to why these dogs are on the z/d only to be eating Ceasar along with it...

Yummy!

I was at the vet's today picking up Heartguard, and Ian and I were reading the ingredients on the Science Diet bags while we were waiting for the meds. I think the worst one was the "sensitive skin" formula... Pork Meal was the meat, and it was like the 4th ingredient down on the list =/

Science Diet sponsors alot of things, provides discounts and not only that it has the words science and diet in it.

Anything with the words science and diet is definately good for you, because those are words that represent things that are good for you.

The excuse I've read from people who support those foods are that they don't think it's different to give by-products than when people give their dog the whole chicken to eat... not sure people realize what's really in the by-products.

That being said, we have to feed one of our cats the k/d can version, he hates it, but the ingredients are not TOO bad. But yeah he really doesn't eat much of it anyway :(

Fran, far be it to bring up another sickening brand, but Eukanuba makes a minced canned kd and cats seem to like it more. But to be honest with you, my cat, who died last year at age 21, was diagnosed with CRF at around age 16, and he wouldn't eat any of that crap, but he did tolerate the Euk kd minced. But the real improvement came when I home cooked for him and his numbers came down dramatically. He lived for nearly five years with no symptoms and he never had to be hydrated during that time. He died of, as you can imagine, old age. I have no idea if this is a coincidence or not, but it did happen.

Jessie, did you ever see the ingredients on SD Advanced Protection. It appears to be very successful at protecting pets from meat.

Well, judging by science, corn and peanut hulls are much better for dogs than meat.

The product is recommended by vets everywhere... so it's obviously the best!

Oh but they would never admit to that...
According to far too many vets this food is the "only way to go" its sort of fun stumping them with questions on the ingredients. Its a shame, I understand it costs a fortune to become a vet, but shouldnt it be for the love of animals?? not harming them.

When I worked at the clinic I had to push SD and it killed me. It was such crap and it drove me crazy having to feed the clients a line of bull about how great it was.

Last Friday while I was watching Alice's surgery I got to stand by the huge full shelves of SD that they keep in the back. It was haunting me...I actually felt uncomfortable standing by it, LOL! Such horrible memories...
