Hey guys;

One of my friends wants a dog. I told her about chaz but she doesn't have the internet so I will get you to answer her.

Lives in a house
Large backyard
Able to walk 1-3 hours a day
Size doesn't matter
Needs to be a good watchdog and would protect property if needed

Anyone have any suggestions?

I suggested Bullmastiff, Dobe to her. Any other suggestions?? Thanks.

That's a pretty general description of what she's got to offer. Sounds like she just wants a guard dog? Can't help. She needs to offer more in what she's looking for in a COMPANION...
p.s. and the walking 1 to THREE hours/day seems pie in the sky...

Well, Elin, not 3 hours, like she owns a big property, you know? So the dog can run as much as his heart desires :)

Anyways, companionship? UMMMM.... Yeah a pretty friendly dog. Actually I just spoke to her on the phone and what she meant by 'guard dog' was like a bark if someone came to the door or something.

I think a GSD would be good. Or even a bull mastiff, dobe, rottie, great dane, shar pei, or many other breeds. There are alot of good breeds to choose from.

From the description of what she's looking for, really any dog would fit the bill unless it's a scaredy cat that hides if someone knocks on the door. I would defintely send her in the direction of rescuing a dog out of the shelter. I would suggest a good big ole mutt that needs a break in life. Usually those are the ones that bond most closely if the heart is where it should be while rescuing...

Sirus... looks like most of the rescues , except is it a private one ?? Canada ?? A little pricey . Ours is GRRACE.ORG . I wonder if people might rescue from the HS and then sell !? Interesting thought !

almost any breed will make a good companion and bark when someone knocks at the door, rings the bell, or approaches the door/windows. I'd say get her a couple of dog books and magazines, have her read about them and narrow down to the ones she thinks she likes the best. then have her go to the library, your house etc and get online and read up more about them. or instead of her looking them up online after narrowing down, she could give you the narrowed down list and you could find 2-5 sites about each breed and print them out for her to read. then she could narrow it down even further and contact breed rescues and area shelters.

Yes Canada and they are all pricey here. That is why I looked into the US for adopting and stayed away from Canada. Yes I know a lady here in our town who regularily goes to the Ottawa Humane society and rescues [she does nto ahve to pay the adoption fee unless medical work has been done] and then does nothing, no vet checks, no needles, no spay/neuter contracts, no questionaires, no nothing...........first come with cash first serve. She will sell anything to anyone. I know because we went there and looked at a gsd/dobe/rotti mix that had already bit two young children. WIth me standing there with my two young kids she said oh but she will not bite now. But there was no training or anything done so why wouldn't she? THe price for these dogs that have nothing done ..........$275-$500

If she goes to several shelters and gets to know some different breeds/dogs I'm sure she'll figure it out. She'll probably fall in love first. :)
