Hydro, if the puppies in that pet shop aren't from puppy mills, they're from backyard breeders (BYB). These are a step higher than puppy mills, but they're not as good as reputable breeders. They do no health testing. They do not show. They often breed more than one breed and/or designer mixes. No reputable breeder would sell their puppies to a pet shop. They would sell them by themselves and scan buyers.

I personally am warry of any advertised litter or caged dog in a store. Any good breeder has a waiting list for their pups and/or word of mouth after the whelp. The one statement I HATED when I bred Goldens.....when do you get rid of them !!!!

Hold It

 I would re-think having an "attack dog" trainer help you with any obedience training with your new pup. You need to go to PUPPY SCHOOL with any dog you get. Your dog needs to go to school to be socialized with ALL kinds of people and other dogs from the very beginning. You need to be the one to work with your dog so the dog develops respect and a loving relationship with you-it's loving owner!! I sure hope that you are not looking for an agressive breed so that you can have a guard dog. This is not necessary as people have said before, GSD's are plenty protective on their own. It is your job to help your dog control it's protective tendencies and know when they are appropriate, not encourage aggressive or attack behavior! Pleeeeeeeeeease re-think getting a puppy from a pet store. NO reputable breeder would ever choose this avenue. Most puppies that end up in pet stores are poor examples of their breed through carless breeding methods and lack of knowledge on the breeders part. They often have poor temperaments and are under socilaized...this can make for a dangerous situation with a GSD. A lot of times, the puppies that end up in the pet store are the last puppies left that no one would pick. There are reasons behind this. When I worked in the vet clinic, we saw so many puppies from pet stores that had parvo (a potentially fatal virus) and kennel cough, worms, malnutrition, you name it and they had it. I know this pet store claims to back you for one year, but trust me, you don't want to watch your pup go through one of these diseases...even if someone else is paying the bill. :(

I definetly would not like my dog going through those diseases. We are going to be training the dog to socialize and become even more of an attack dog. I don't believe in being born as an attack dog naturally. This dog is going to be my companion and a killer for anyone else.

All I can say, is that what you are doing is really sad, for you and your dog, and I am sorry you feel that kind of liability is something you want in your life. Unfortunatley these situations usually lead to your dog being euthanized and your a** in jail. You are a Marine and you need a dog to protect you?

Don't get a dog...Just buy a gun! People who encourage dogs to attack are the whole problem that leads to Dog Breeds getting banned. The culture of fear is so bad in the USA it is really depressing. Why would want your dog to enter combat of any sort. Any man can disable even a large dog in seconds. That means your loyal and loving companion will be killed or injured for some bizarre expression of machoness. This attitude really burns me up!!

No, a dog wouldn't be born an attack dog naturally, but I have a GSD and I can assure you he is a natural protector..WITHOUT needless attack training. That means he would protect me if a situation proved life threatening.....I would bet on it in a heartbeat. To go beyond that natural instinct and specifically train your dog to be a killer (your word) is dangerous beyond belief. You are asking for trouble, and I am telling you that you are asking for MORE danger to the dog...and a lawsuit to yourself....or worse. Have you even researched GSDs? I personally don't think you have the proper personality to own one.

Hydro, what Debi said is right on. Why do you feel you need an attack dog? Why is this a glorious image in your mind? What are you so afraid of that you feel housing a dangerous animal is necessary to keep you safe? What happens someday when you have a significant other, or family visits, or you have children of your own, or your dog attacks a niece or a nephew? I guess I just don't understand your frame of mind...help me understand

I'm getting this dog as a guard for my mother and father who live in a terrible neighborhood here in Brooklyn. We need a good dog who will take care of intruders in the house hold, why is everyone flipping out because I'm going to train my German Shepherd to be an attack dog? Police do it all the time, all over the world. I'll have a lease and a mask on it whenever anyone is around it but myself or my parents. I'm not going to starve it and make it a psycho. I'm going to take care of it, but with additional training with human dummies and to not accept food from anyone but me.

Well I'm against it. If your dog bites anyone he will probably be put to sleep. Not to mention the training can go very wrong and I think it's cruel to take a sweet puppy and raise it so it has to wear a muzzle (is that what you mean by mask?). Dogs naturally guard their families. Even the sweetest family dogs. My Mikey is the man of the house when my bf is gone and he takes that responsibility very seriously. But he still adores other people, just not if they seem to be a threat to me. Nobody trained him to be that way he just is and I love him even more for it. But I would die if he hurt someone and had to be put to sleep. He was very agressive with a police officer who came to our door asking for directions. I had to restrain him and leave him inside. If I'd let him out he probalby would have been shot. My dogs are part of my family and because of that they are much more protective of their family. That includes a cat if it gets out into the yard. Mikey stays quite close to the escaped cat even though he harrasses them when they are inside. I really hope you reconsider. You don't need the dog for any situations where it will be constantly chasing down criminals. For the most part just having a protective dog is enough to make many criminals think twice.

Hyrdo---

German Shepherds are natural guard dogs. You can ask any GSD owner and I'm sure they'll tell you what awesome watch dogs they make (WITHOUT training). My neighbors had a long-haired GSD named Coke. He was very loyal and sweet, but a wonderful guard dog. I have a collie/shepherd mix. She has never set a paw in a training class, yet she has a strong bark, and guards well. A dog doesn't need to be trained to love and protect it's family.

The biggest problem I have with this is that German Shepherds already have a bad reputation. If your dog bites someone or shows any other aggressive behavior, there is a good chance the breed will have an even worse reputation, and that your dog will be euthanized.

German Shepherds are dogs that are loyal to their families, that want to protect them as much as possible. I read a story about a GSD breeder's male shepherd....their neighbor came over every Thursday to eat dinner, but this particular Thursday, he didn't knock on the door. Instead, he just came inside. The shepherd rushed to the door and placed his mouth over the man's hand. The dog owner came to the door and told the dog to release, which the dog did. He had held onto the hand hard enough that the man could not get loose, loose enough that he didn't puncture the skin.

Please, please, please, PLEASE rethink all this.

I can't believe he doesn't get it....Dogs are not weapons. Buy your father a shotgun. You should NEVER encourage your dog to bite! Bark...yes Bite....no

No, they're not. They're companions.

There are lots of breeds out there with bad raps....German Shepherds, Pit Bulls (this includes Staffies and AmStaffs....because they're "pitbull types" ), Japanese Akitas, Siberian Huskies, Malamutes......and mostly because of people who don't raise their dog right.

Roommates dog Bailey is half GSD and can be real protective of the house. One time before I got my dog I came home and he had let himself out of his room and he was in protective mode. It took me half an hour to calm him down to let him outside to do his thing. When the roommte was out of state the neighbor lady let the dogs out while I was at work, the first day Bailey had her barked into a corner for close to an hour. It was a good thing she was used to and good at dealing with aggresive dogs, its a good thing Bailey is all bark. Bailey has no protection training, Ive known that dog since he was a pup and he had me barked down for a half hour.

A friend I had as a teen had an Akita. That dog was trained as a protector, because of that his familly and the electric company had an understanding the dog would not be out in the yard when the meter reader came by. Im not sure who let the dog out but my friend came home from school to find the Reader lieing in the drive way with his boys in the dogs mouth. Every time the man moved the dog applyed presure, I never found out how they got away with a fine and got to keep the dog. That was a very expensive dog to start and even more in training. That dog was never trusted with his younger brother and sisters.

Well be ready to find yourself in jail and your dog with a bullet in its head. Your just going to increase the bad name of the GSD if you do this. Once again they are not weapons. All three of my Pitbulls are rescues. Zeus had gone through 3 homes before coming to me. His first owner tried to make Zeus a attack dog to guard his property Zeus and the mans three other attack dogs (these were not fighting but Guard dogs) were seized Zeus just a pup still has problems with men the other three dogs had to be put done because their owner was stupid.

When i say your dog will have a bullet in its head its true. When i was a kid there was a big deal about a young girl walking home from school and Guard Dog GSD trained to kill attacked the little girl blinding her in one eye the dog was shot on the spot when authorities got there the dog was vicouse to the police and had had a record of attacking people in the past. I do not feel bad for the people at all.

Teaching a dog to kill is sick im sorry but it is

Big difference between a police dog and a Guard dog. Police dogs are NOT attack dogs. You can not be around this dog at all times and you cannot keep him from hurting people at all times. How may I ask are you going to turn this dog vicouse? I sure hope he doesent kill any babies

Hydro... I personally think you just want to rile up this dog friendly forum. You know you don't want an "attack" dog !!! A dog for protection , yes. But even there you could be in trouble. I feel no dog unless under the trained hands of the military .....now I have to back down ! Sh*t . Not you in the military as a house dog, but trained to police action. Don't get an attack dog until you are either needing one connected to military service, or retire and become a police canine unit to salve your ego.

Ummm.....First of all my dog is not going to be jumping every where attacking everyone. It will attack intruders who break into my backyard or home, the dog WILL NOT be put to sleep for that nor will anyone be arrested or sued. Incase you don't know about weapon laws in NYC, let me tell you about them. NYC is the most sickening liberal city in the world, and I hate it for that reason. To get a gun licensce, you'd be better off having a Katana at home. I have plenty of licensced weapons at home in Florida but it's different in New York especially the city. A bark? do you really think a criminal is just going to be scared of a barking dog? I don't think so, my dog will be trained to kill anything that I tell it to, or anyone entering my perimeter without my supervision. I am not buying this dog as a weapon, instead im buying it to be a protecting member of my family.

I've noticed that a lot of you people are more "PETA" typed people which I am far from. My dog will be treated like a member of my family and will be great companions with my father, but it will also make sure your ass is dead if you step on my property and it sure as hell won't eat any poisonous food you try to feed it.

Hell yes we are most of us have rescued dogs and other animals from bad situations and are big on animal rights and im sticking to my guns here. Like said before which you have seemed to ignore GSDs are plenty protective enough with out training. A GSD will protect out of love on its own why put it through training.

What makes you think they dog will see a guest as any different from a intruder. If your dog attacks a guest in your home yes the dog will be put down because it made a mistake. A mistake you enabled.
