Giant Feline aliens in jowly dog suits
The breed, as far as anyone can tell, goes back to the 16th century. The origins are, of course, dim. There is obviously Bloodhound, probably some Dane, most likely the Mastiff blood comes from an ancient (and now extinct) Portuguese Mastiff breed. No one is quite sure where the distinctive "camel gait" is from. They have the same gait as a cat - opposite that of a dog. They are blazing fast and agile, particularly for a dog of their size (90 - 180 pounds is the rough standard). They are bred to herd and otherwise deal with the semi-wild cattle of the Brazillian
fazendas, hunt jaguar and wild boar, and are supremely defensive property and personal guardians. One character trait they are well known for is the
ojeriza, a highly developed distrust of strangers. (My vet jokingly refers to them as "alligators with fur.") Rarely will an adult Fila willingly suffer the touch of a stranger, but they usually adore children. It is unusual to find a Fila that is intolerant of other dogs. They are also the ultimate velcro dog. They MUST be with their people to be happy and sane. There is an old saying in Brazil (where the Fila is from): "Faithful as a Fila."
They also seem to have quite a "thing" for redheads, leading me to think that perhaps they may be descended from the Hounds of Annwyn
They are frighteningly intelligent, clever, cunning, manipulative, deceitful, hold a grudge until the end of time . . .
There are quite a few Fila stories on Chazhound, contributed by those of us who are owned by Filas. Mine are Shiva and Kharma, Filarotten's is Brutus, and Buckshot's is Buckshot. Eva, who is new to us here at Chazhound, is from France and is happily owned by about 16 of the Monsters
