Hi all , i need some advice. I have an 8 week old staff pup, It had worms ( roundworm) which seems to be gone now but she had it bad.

We had her to a vet but he just gave her vitamins.

She wouldnt eat or drink and was very dehydrated.

Anyways shes started to eat and drink but in very very little quanitys and shes very very skinny/thin.

Thats just a little history. The reason i post is because i think she has brain damage.

She loads alot of food into her mouth but dosnt swallow it and she chokes because she has so much food in her mouth.

When she goes to take a drink , she looses her feet and falls into the bowl but she has energy and she tries to be active.

She wants cuddled 24/7 and acts like a really old dog. She also falls over her own feet when walking about the room.

We are going to try find a better vet to look at her and i know it will be expencive.

Has any1 ever seen this problem before or could somebody please provide advise/links to sites where i can read some more about it. i will upload a picture of 2 dogs and the small 1 is ours and the brindle coloured 1 is her sister from same litter.

Any advise would be helpful.

I was thinking if its really bad, i may have her put to sleep as i dont want her to be suffering.

Thanks for reading and any help would be appreciated.

she is so sweet! maybe she is still recouperating from being ill when she had the worms. she has to drink, so keep trying to give her water. sounds like she is weak...she is such a little baby. I've seen many very clumsy puppies...at 8 weeks for sure. BUT, it wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion from another vet. also, my puppies loved to cuddle at that age. they tire out quickly and sleep alot. :) try a bland diet for a few days, boiled chicken and rice.

Its hard to tell from the pic, but isthe pups spine sticking out. Please take the pup to a different vet, I would take him to emergency now. How long have you had him? where did you get him from? has he had any of his shots? Please let us know how he is.

First, get to another vet for a second opinion. And make a list of all concerns and medications given etc.

Next, the picture you posted from what I can tell looks disturbing to me. The puppy on the right looks like she is in distress. Not even taking into consideration the size difference and symptoms you stated. The pup looks sick and in pain. Since the picture is not that good, I could be wrong, but she definately does not look comfortable. I would seek a second opinion and be very thorough in giving information to the vet.
Best Wishes, and please keep us updated.

Here are 7 more pics of Honey , Im going to try get her to the animal hostpital on monday as the local vet is to expencive.

Ive also discovered 3 small lump/sores on her head , there was 1 this week but 2 more appeared.

Give me your opinion on these pics. She left her litter at 6 weeks and all the siblings are ok.

Shes following me about and wagging her tail.

Oh, those pictures show a dog in need of care.

She looks very unhealthy. Your job is to find out why, and quickly.

Blood tests........fecals......good food.......not grocery store crap. Complete physical!! She looks dehydrated and starving. Does she have fleas/ticks?

What medication was she dewormed with?

I hope you follow up soon.

How was she kept at the breeders? Did she have any medical care?

She was alot worse than this and i mean alot worse.

We took her to the orignal vet due to him being the only 1 open on a sunday and he praised us for the work we have done.

He says shes on her way back and still recovering.

He gave her another injection and said to make sure she keeps getting fluids.

We got her home and she ate roast beef and gravy. she actuly ate it and swallowed.

Im sure she will do another solid stool soon.

I will keep the forum updated on her progress but i personaly think she will make a full recovery soon.

Last night she looked bad but somehow today shes alot better(what the differance a day makes)

Thanks for all your help and ill keep you all updated.

Reply to this post.

She was wormed with sherlys worming syrup. She didnt come from a breeder as my 2 brothers own staffs and they got together accidently and well 3 months later lol.

We gave her roast beef today - good food.

The litter of 10 all survived and im guessing shes the runt.

I am glad she is feeling better.

I will also add some of my thoughts and opinions.:D
Sherleys worming syrup uses the active ingredient: Piperazine Citrate
It is not the most effective dewormer. It only will kill roundworms.
It also can cause side effects in some dogs. Such as the type of things you voiced concerns about. The stumbling, cordination, you even mentioned "brain damage". If this pup is having reactions to this dewormer, it would be in the pups best interest to NOT use it again.

A safer dewormer might be an OTC dewormer with the active ingredient "pyrantel pamoate". Just ask your vet!! I have not known a vet to reccommend Piperazine Citrate.

Since you have not given alot of information regarding health care......I will tell you, the pup looks haunched over and in pain, ribs showing, and swollen belly.
If the only dewormer the pup received was piperazine citrate, and if she had no fecal from the vet, I would be concerned about hookworms......they can make a pup look like that. They suck the blood right out of a pup from their intestinal walls. But pyrantel pamoate will kill hooks. The best thing for you to do is; gather your information. Take into consideration what has been tested for and what has not. What meds the pup has had, and the reactions. And present this all to a trusted vet. Be very through, it could mean the difference in suffering, or being well quickly.

I wish you the best..............and do lots of research, being informed can really help the decisions you contribute too.

Keep us updated,
Julie.

Could you bring her for a second opinion? The pup looks sick comparing the size of her own litter and also her swollen tummy + ribs showing. Maybe another vet can give you a better opinion?

Well i have the diagnosis for her illness now and i can confirm it was DISTEMPER.

As i say was means shes now asleep and we had the vet put her to sleep to end any other suffering.

The 4 remaining pups in the litter are showing signs andc im now advising they be put to sleep also but they may be at a stage where they can be saved. Ill let you know.

Oh, I am so sorry for your loss. I knew the pup looked sickly, but that was one of the worst outcomes.
At least she is no longer in pain.
I have been thinking about you and your pup, now I know she is at peace.

Again, I am so sorry.
Julie.
