Unless it is specialy designed for large breed pups. Regular puppy food is to high in levels of calcium and phosphorus (I believe that is the two that cause the issue), making the dog grow a lot faster than it should which can lead to joint issues. A chow would be in that range of medium-large breed so I wouldn't feed a regular puppy food. I perfer to stick to an all life stages kind of food like Canidae or Innova that way I don't have to get three different foods for three different ages/types of dogs!
A Chow barely fits into the medium breed status. They are Whippet sized under all the hair.
I would like to know the source of the above "information" on feeding puppy foods? Joint issues come from a puppy being fat. And I see nothing in that statement addressing the difference in puppy and adult metabolic rates.
You CAN feed adult food if you supplement it with powdered milk and maybe some Nutracal (if you can afford that stuff.) Now mind you, I can only base what I have observed in the process of raising hundreds of puppies over the years. I think it is what some people call RESEARCH??? Even if one does not realize it, the results of practices done over a great period of time are actually scientific research.
Of course, I realize that hands on experience cannot hold a candle to all the REPORTS presented around here. And that most of the people writing those reports don't know diddley about feeding puppies based on their own experiences, lol. But hey......let us not quibble....or should I say KIBBLE!!!?????
(That was a pretty good pun, if I do say so myself, roflolololol.)
