And everyday that goes by she is getting more and more rambuctious (sp) I think I will try to find a class that is soon than the other one I am going to be going too...:(

I know its only the first day, but I dont know what to do, so that she wont run from it.. :(

Chloe is scared of the clicker :( everytime I clicked it she ducked her head and ran away...and she wouldnt come near me...

Finally, I sat on the floor with her, and told her down (which she did) and I tried again....and this time she would actually stay there and let me click and give the treats...(not sure if that was a good idea but everytime she saw or heard the clicker she ran, unless I was sitting in the floor with her) I know that is not good to do..

because I thought I had seen somewhere to get them used to the sound of the click...and to get used to the idea that when they heard the click it equaled treat...so thats what I was trying to do for the first day...

*sigh*

Oh Jess :( I am so sorry that you are frustrated, but Chloe is a smart girl and I know you guys will make progress. Keep trying!

We tried the clicker training with Scout, but she was really afraid of it too. We decided not to use it because she has so many other noise sensitivities that it just didn't seem to be working to add another noise. Is Chloe afraid of other noises like fireworks and thunder?

I am sure some of the trainers on here will have good ideas for you and you can get back on track. Good luck!

She has never heard fireworks up close (on the 4th they were so far away they didnt make a difference)

Loud noises havent really bothered her before unless she didnt see where they were coming from, and I showed her the clicker and she watched me click it and ran :(

I'm trying my best not to be frustrated* and I know she is a VERY smart girl, I just want her to be well behaved....and as food motivated as she is, I thought it would be the best thing for her...

*I'm not frustrated at her, I'm frustrated at myself....

It seems like since she isn't afraid of noises and is food motivated that this would be the perfect training tool for you. Perhaps Chloe is just afraid because the clicker is new and different and she will get better with practice. Others will probably know more.

I didn't mean to imply you were frustrated with Chloe. I am sorry if that came across wrong.

you don't need to use a clicker. she's not alone in being sound-sensitive- there are any number of dogs in the same boat. would the click of a retractable ballpoint pen freak her out? you can also get the same effect with simply using a special word like "good" or "yes" to mark the behavior. it's not as exact, but it works just as well.

hang in there!

I have two different types of clickers, and one makes a much softer sound than the other. The "box" type - which is rectangular with the metal "flap" is pretty loud; I also have a couple that are sort of oval with a plastic button that makes a softer noise. Maybe try a different clicker?

Why do you want to use the clicker? If it scares her so much, I would just do what elegy said and use a word like "good"

I chose not to do clicker training with Zoe. It didn't scare her but I just had a hard time getting her to respond to it. So when she does good I say "good girl" and treat.

I know you didn't know it would scare her. But now that you know, why let it frustrate you instead of just trying something else?

I'm sorry I didn't mean to offend you or anything. I was just trying to understand. Maybe I completely missed something somewhere. I'm sorry.

You didnt :)

I'm just frustrated with myself because I just dont know what else to try....sometimes she will do anything for a treat, and sometimes she looks at me like "what are you trying to give me"

Sorry :)

Tango (when she was younger, about a year old) was also afraid of clickers and reacted much the same way as you're describing Chloe. I stopped using it and haven't tried again since, but now she can be around clicker trained dogs and be just fine and doesn't seem afraid anymore. Perhaps this is something Chloe will also grow out of? I used and still use the word "yes!" in place of the clicker for her in a happy voice, and it works very well. I do use food as a reward sometimes, but most of the time it's just tons of praise and maybe a toy.

I hope everything gets better for both you and Chloe soon! :)

Kai was a little afraid of it at first, because he's very sensative. So, I wrapped it in a towel at first to muffle the sound. Then I started using it in my pocket. Now, I can use it without muffling the sound at all, and he isn't afraid at all. He just wants his treat! :D
