i dont really trust anyone in my area for that. the closest people are an hour away... she's way to rambunctious(sp) to go stay at my other family's houses...

*sigh* I was hoping that this would happen AFTER our trips!!!

i dont know what to do, other than cancel my trips wich i really shouldnt do, but I dont see any other option. I cant leave Maya cooped up in a crate in a hotel room all day.. thats not fair to her. And there wont even be room for her in the vehicle as it will be 4 adults, 1 teenager and my son in his big bulky car seat, plus all of our luggage in one Yukon... we are gonna be crammed in there even without her... :(

call your vet--have her checked, and ask re:spay while you are gone--if she isn't quite yet in heat.

spays absolutely can be done while in heat. while the blood vessels are larger, they are also larger once a dog has gone through one heat, period - a spay is never as easy as prior to the first heat! there is a risk of bleeding out from ANY surgery - you don't need to be in heat for that to be a problem. good surgical technique can limit the risks, in heat or not.

talk to your vet- they may board her, but it will be with much more strict instructions. i have always boarded intact females in heat, but there is an additional fee since the bitch needs to be kept away from EVERY other dog and we do not board them in the general wards.

and i agree - i encourage everyone to spay BEFORE the first heat for 99% of folks out there.

Thanks for giving great information there, Doberkim! I didn't know most of that. :)

Jack will definitely miss Maya until she can come play again, but it is for the best to keep them apart.

I wouldn't start counting days until the first sign of blood and then keep her away from intact males for a month or until the swelling goes down.

Thanks, just reading all this info on my dog's first heat has been real helpful. I didn't know we should have had her spayed first off, but we will as soon as this is over. Mostly it's all the spotting that's making me go crazy. I tried making diapers for her from some soft fabric with safety pins, but she kept slipping through them. Then I bought some pampers ($6!!) and cut a hole in them for her tail, but she slipped through them too! Help, what do I do or where can I buy some diapers for her that will STAY on her. Thanks!!

Find a dog show in your area and you can purchase bitch britches there!

You can get them there too, but they don't stay on like the ones that are handmade and sold at dog shows with overlapping velcro. Plus, the bitch britches at dog shows are way cuter!;)

Jennifer - I think I have some BitchesBritches, but they're probably too big for Maya! I bought them at Petsmart, they're dark denim colored and have nice wide velcro enclosures. Expensive, but well worth it.

Sizzle, thanks I will be at a petsmart hopefully tomorrow. I'll see what they have

But now that I look at Maya her vulva and nipples arent swollen and I havent seen any trace of blood yet. I think I might have been wrong about her going into heat. I have been wiping her several times a day looking for blood becuase I am paranoid I will miss it or something. I am beginning to think that I was seeing things in the first place.
