Her vulva will appear swollen and nipples can become enlarged. Prepare yourself for bleeding to start at any moment. The flow can be quite heavy at first. Keep her on a lead (even in the yard) for a least a month. No parks etc....watch her like a hawk!

I hope you have some bitch britches to prevent the blood from getting all over your home. It really can get quite messy.

Also, if you aren't going to breed her please realize that with each heat cycle her uterus becomes more and more unhealthy. Her risk of mammary cancer also increases and if left intact long term she will most likely develop pyometra (potentially deadly uterine infection).

no she is getting spayed after her first heat cycle. I was told it would be best to let her have one heat cycle before spaying her.

Will her behavior change at all with the heat cycle?

It could. Some bitches get moody, some needy. It really depends on the bitch.

The main thing is being absolutely diligent about making sure she's never out of your sight. Even if the bleeding stops, she is still in heat and generally this is the fertile period.

she wont be around any intact males untill she is after she is spayed. If she is outside she is either in a huge kennel run or on the end of the leash... how long will she be in heat? and when would it be safe to have her spayed?

Mine got really horny! She started humping any stuffed animal she could get her paws on. When she started bleeding it came as little drips and then a heavier flow. I got her some litt;e panties to wear since she sleeps with me. I'd still wake up to a bed that looked like somebody had been shot...haha.

Like everyone said, keep her away from males (even nuetered ones will probably take an extra interest and try to mount) I waited until after her first heat to spay her but I got very mixed reviews on that. Even the vet couldnt give me a straight answer on whether it was better to wait or do it before her first cycle. I seem to remember her heat cyles lasting a goof 3-4 weeks...the swelling didn't go down until a week or two after she stopped bleeding.

Plan on a month for her heat cycle start to finish. It can vary from bitch to bitch however.

If your kennel run is not fully enclosed then I would not leave her out there unattended. Male dogs will go to all ends of the earth to get to a bitch that is ready to be bred. This includes, jumping, climbing and chewing their way to a mating!

Our backyard is very enclosed. When I have a bitch in season, I find urine spots in hubby's grass from males coming into our yard. Trust me, they WILL find her.

oh goodness.. well.. this is just kind of sucky... in about three weeks Maya will need to be boarded at the vet becuase we are going out of town for a weekend... :( do you think this might cause problems? I will of course request that she be walked by herself and I will let the vet and everyone there know that she is in heat...

Most vets won't board a bitch in heat. It will cause other male boarders or patients to go crazy. I would check with them ahead of time and be aware that this will most likely be when she is most fertile and must be left in very responsible hands!

There are vets that will spay while the dog is in heat. i don't really understand why it was suggested to wait until AFTER a heat cycle? I have always been told, taught, read, whatever that it increases the risk of cancer if you let them go thru a heat cycle, that is why you want to spay BEFORE the first heat.

Anyways, call your vet and see if they will get her in now maybe.

The blood vessels "down there" expand, and if you rupture them the dogs can bleed to death on the table, I think.

Honestly, I'd wait until after. Just because my kitties almost died with their spay.... Chili was in heat and Em was going into heat, and Chil was the one the vet was most surprised about living. :(

lol yeah thats what I was thinking... no jack for her :( she'll be sooo sad. She just adores Jack.

Maybe im wrong about her going into heat though. her nipples and vulva arent any more swollen today. I dont know. Maybe I'll call the vet and take her in and have him take a look.. I dont know what to do. I cant cancel my trip the first weekend of August. Plus i just found out today that we most likely will be making a trip to Oklahoma July 18-23rd. that one we COULD take her with if we absolutly had to. It would be very hard but it could happen. *sigh* I dont know what to do...

Looks like you're going to be making the trip WITH Maya . . . and don't, DO NOT leave her out in the kennel. Matings can occur through those fences! Never out of your sight unless she's securely inside the house.

It gets rough . . . Have a ((((((((HUG))))))))) ; you'll need it ;)

The vulvar swelling along with enlarged nipples is generally the first sign that the heat is about to come. Sometimes this happens a couple weeks before the bleeding starts. If you have noticed these signs, she IS about to come into season. It's just a matter of time. I would recommend you wipe her vulva daily with a clean, white tissue. This way you will know for sure her first day of her season. Some dogs can bleed, but they keep themselves so clean that their owner never notices the bloody discharge.

I don't know if the vet can tell you much unless they are experienced in reproduction and know what to look for on a vaginal cytology slide.

Have you thought about a pet sitter that comes to your home?
