First off, the best thing you can do for your dog is just to love it and take it to normal obedience classes so that you two can bond and have the fun of learning how to work with each other. Then you dog will naturally want to alert you to things going on, and will bark if someone comes to the door. All you need for that is lots of treats, praise and a normal buckle collar and leash.

Now if you want a mean dog that tries to kill anyone who walks past your yard, chain it up and ignore it. Maybe whack it with a 2x4 occassionally when you give it it's weekly feeding. Please, please do not do any thing I just said in this paragraph!!! That's how we end up with pitbulls in the news.

I'll fill you in on the first part of training your dog to be a guard dog. Is this a puppy?

Socialize every single day. Take her someplace new, new ground surfaces, new people, crowds, small numbers of people, all kinds of people, big, little, wearing hats, men, women, using umbrellas, running, walking, dogs, puppies, machinery, traffic, the vet office for a social call and a treat, have people come to your house and give her treats and play with her. Get together with friends with friendly pups. Go in an elevator or along the city sidewalk. Let people stop and pet her and give her treats. Be friendly yourself to people. Enroll her in obedience class using positive method trianing. Condition her gently to anything and everything you will ever want to do with her; nail clipping, ear cleaning, teeth brushing, other grooming, let strangers (friends first) open her mouth and examine her teeth and go all over her body with their hands. Let people pat her on top of her head gently and give treats. Teach her her basic obedience commands and be gentle and rewarding, never punishing. Show her what you want, re-direct or distract from behaviors you don't want and praise/treat her for wanted behaviors.

When she is absolutely comfortable and confident, not shy one bit with all of the above, you will have a dog who knows the difference between the good guys and the bad guys. When the abnormal occurs, she will alert you and let them know that they need to back off, if she has it in her temperament. If not, you wouldn't have had a guard or protection dog anyhow. You'd have a nice, friendly dog who's a good ambassador to the breed. God knows, they can use some.

If you don't socialize and train the dog amply, you may well end up with a thug, not a guard or protection dog.

(most dogs have some protection instincts, just because they're pack animals)

If by guard you mean a dog who will bark a warning when she hears an intruder, and run to the door to inspect any strangers, you really don't need to train her to do that. Most dogs do it naturally. The best training for that is basic obedience training.

If by guard you mean a dog who will, on command or with sufficient provocation, bite a person, you need a professional to help you with that. There is a sport, schutzhund, which is all about that sort of training. Be aware that many dogs are unsuitable for that training - if a dog isn't stable, good-natured and confident, it will not be happy or competent at this work. Even if the dog is suitable and the training is successful, having a dog trained for attack work is a great responsibility. You will have given the dog the green light to do something most family pets are absolutely forbidden to do - bite a human. It's your responsibility to keep the dog away from situations that could lead to a bad bite - a retarded adult behaving inappropriately, for instance, or a protective mother overreacting to the sight of your pit bull.

Good luck with your dog.

Johnovan, you do not deserve a dog. Please do your puppy a favor and give her to somebody that will treat her with the kindness and compassion she deserves, and wait to get another dog until you better understand them.

Yes, whacking a dog with a 2x4 might make her mean. It also might kill her or turn her into a cowering wreck. And the fact that you would even CONSIDER beating your dog like that is a sign that you need psychological help. Nobody here is going to tell you how to make your dog mean, because the last thing this world needs is another mean Pitbull.

Ugh.

Get her spayed, give your dog to somebody who will love it and train her properly, then get an alarm system. How's that for good advice?

I meant mine as a joke and not serious advice!!! Well, except for the first part of it. DON'T MAKE HER MEAN!

An alarm system will run you about the same price as it will take to take good care of your dog, probably less if you get her spayed so you don't have puppies to worry about. It might take her a while to start barking, but eventually she will. Lots of times just knowing there is a dog in the house at all will stop a lot of people. Just don't leave her out in the yard where someone can poison her and then break in once she's dead.

It's even harder to distinguish sarcasm over the internet when no punctuation is used. I thought he was serious. 0.o

If you do what you are suggesting - which is make your pit bull mean by whatever you were thinking of - then i have to thank you for being one more person that will lead to my own pit mix being taken from me. Thank you SO MUCH for wanting to give a breed I love so very much an even worse name than it has now. (and that was an example of sarcasm).

Your dog as she grows older will grow more protective of your home and your person. She will learn to bark at intruders and/or strange noises (although she probably won't attack them with anything but kisses) all in due time. Give her a chance to be a puppy, treat her well (meaning give her adequate food, water, love and vet care) and she will give you her life.

If you abuse her? Then you will get what you give. You will get a dog that is fearful of you, who does not trust you, and will attack anything that threatens her sense of well-being. Those are the dogs that are in the news... ones that have been mistreated... those are the ones that are making it hard for me to keep my own lovable short legged monster of a pit mix.

If that's what you want in the end? Then I have nothing more to say to you. I can't even wish you good luck.
