I was just reading one of my books dedicated to Miniature Schnauzers, and it mentioned dognappers. After reading this, I became worried incase some thieves stole my Dog after I get one. An old cat of mine was stolen, and although I was dissapointed, it wasn't like losing a close friend because she never really felt close to me. How would you feel if someone stole your Dog? I think I'd be distraught because I plan on building a great bond with my future Dog, and will probably look at her like a child of mine.

Im in the same boat as you. I plan on keeping mine with me almost all the time. I will be able to take my puppy to work. After he is grown however, if someone tries to steal him I will likely just find chunks of thief in the dogs stool

I would be so sad! But I'm paranoid about not letting it happen - I check on the dogs every 10 minutes when they are outside (fenced yard.. and Boris would bark if someone got in anyway), and never let them out when I am not home.

It's just horrible when that happens. I don't think it would be very easy to dognap Maverick or Nanook since they are both wary of people but Mikey loves any kind of attention. I do worry about that. I know there was a dog that was dognapped in the area and the owners were quite frantic. They had posters everywhere. Poor thing. I don't think they ever found it but I'll ask around.

My friend who trains horses had four pb yearlings in a pen right behind her house. These were the babies of everyone's favourite mares. Seriously, it seemed like everyone decided to breed their best, show horse that year. And someone walked up onto their property, haltered the horses and walked them off. They took them to a trailer that was parked by the highway and when the yearlings wouldn't load they just turned them loose. Three of them were killed by a semi on the highway. :( It was heartbreaking for everyone.

That made me look into things like tattooing and microchipping. And what I found is that mircochips aren't as useful as you think since not every shelter/animal control unit has the means to read the chips and even if they do it might not be the right brand as there are different brands and they only read their own chip. You may have a better chance of having your animal identified with a tattoo if someone bothers to look up the information.

As far as prevention I think you should report anything you see as suspicious and don't encourage your dogs to get into strangers cars....

It is a real fear though. It's one of the reasons I believe in helping people get their dogs back (good owners). What goes around comes around.

Yeah, I don't even have a Dog yet and I'm paranoid about this happening. I read they steal to order, or steal to make them participate in Dog fights. I think people who steal Dog should recieve the same punishment as kidnappers do!

the only time strider or rory are out of my sight AND my wifes sight is when they are in their crates and we have to go somewhere without them. and if someone tried to dognap them and went for strider, Id find the same thing in the house as buckshot.

I agree, Mikey! I would be totally heartbroken!!! I would be distraught and unable to function. My Hunter's microchipped and with today's technology, I'd like to see some kind of GPS system built into those chips! Do you think some day that would be possible?? BTW, Mikey, how do you know your old cat was stolen??

Just one day she was there, and the next she wasn't. So it's pretty obvious she was stolen considering she was a house cat who rarely left the house. She was a beautiful little cat as well. All I have now is my current cat Sir Thomas, who I love to bits and consider to be my best friend. :)

That would be nice a gps unit that would take you to your dog. I would much rather do that than disturb the police about it.

Terrible--that's how I'd feel. I was very worried about that when I first got Rocky because my friend's Lab was stolen.

But I was ALWAYS around him. Now, I don't have to worry about that. Nobody will really go near Rocky, especially after a series of his vicious barks and if anyone did, they'd find the same thing as Stirder and Buckshot would.

it happened to me..my daughter was 4 and i had a fabulous yellow labrador named Hansi..Mypy and Hansi practically teethed on each other. they were inseperable. IT broke her heart. We always had to use extra procaution during hunting season..putting on more secure locks on all of the runs..never knowing breaks your heart..it certainly broke my little gurl's.

I'd go absolutely insane. I would be upset and hysterical, but I would also be after blood if I could ever find the jerk who did it.

I'd freak out if somebody stole my dog...one advantage of having mutts....nobody thinks they are worth anything. I'd be soo misrablie, because it would be like the dog died, but worse, because I wouldn't know where she was at, and she would most likely be in a horrible place...And if I ever found out who did it, like bogolove said, I'd go after blood.

dont kid yourself that mutts are safe..they can be used as bait dogs..as well as labratory animals. if for any reason i have to leave the dogs in the car..(in the winter) all doors are locked and i am no futher then the door at the window with one eye on them at all times..nobody is ever left outside unattended..my friend kelly had her doberman stolen as well and even tho they thought the knew who took it..the couldn't prove it there for nothing was ever done. Most of the time you never find out..and that is the worst heartbreak of all.

You don't really seriously think they'd be the least bit disturbed about it, do you

The thought of someone actually trying to steal a mature Fila is pretty funny . . . I've been in the car with them when they've been upset - at something outside the car - and I can tell you it's not pretty, I can just imagine what it would be if you were shut up in the car with one and were the focus of its irritation . . .

Actually, Buckshot, you're not likely to find chunks of dognapper in Fila doo . . . they have the most AMAZING digestion, rofl!
