If the price quoted for a Leo is out of line, either much lower or higher than the typical price for your country, that is a definite warning sign to be careful and to visit several other breeders. Leos are expensive (in the $1,500 range, regardless of country). The current prices allow most breeders to recoup the costs of breeding healthy litters and also help keep frivolous buyers from purchasing Leos on a whim.
Because Leos should be carefully bred only after the age of 2 years and with a minimum of a year between litters for each female, those from conscientious breeders are limited in number and may be difficult to acquire.

For a quality dog of any of the breeds you're looking for, expect to pay anywhere from $1000-$2500 (especially for a Dane). Giant breeds are not cheap to buy, own or care for. Something to keep in mind. You could probably find a cheap GSD, but unless you've got an "in" from someone, you're probably buying a very cheap dog that will cost you more in the long run, assuming it didn't need PTS from temperment issues.

There was just recently an entire litter of Berner/Leo crosses advertised in the rescue section I think.

You might want to look at rescues, and see if there are any dogs that are right for your family....if I recall correctly, you have to very young children though -and a lot of rescues won't adopt to families with children under certain ages (depends on the rescue though)

Sometimes if you are buying a dog not to show or breed, the breeder will charge less as long as you agree to have the dog spayed/neutered. You might ask this in your inquires.

Plus after the cost of buying that expensive dog you have all the vet bills and other expenses and possible things that could arrise so. So i like animal shelters just as much to they need a home just as much.;)

Ya, I looked on petfinder. There wasnt anything. All breeders are like 5 states away, and Im not ok with shipping and getting a dog I havent seen. I just have to see what I would be spending $1500 on before I get it. :)
I think I am just going to stick to a GSD. I know someone who will breed their dog every so often. She just had a litter 6 months ago. He said hed sell us one for $300 but we were about to have a baby.
I dont think he sold them all. With such young children dont yall think getting a pup around 9 months - 1 year would be ideal?? Im not rushing into anything. It wont be for another good 6 - 9 months +.

Should I pay more less or equal to a price of a puppy?

Did anything we said in this thread sink in? You're going off and doing exactly what you should NOT be doing...

Why is he 'breeding his dog every so often??'

What sort of health testing has this person had done on their dog? Are his dogs involved in any dog sports, agility, obedience, herding etc? How is he titling his dog(s) and working to improve the breed.

You may feel like your getting yourself a deal, but you always get what you pay for. There is most certainly nothing in life that is free.

IDK he is a friend of my bfs family. Hes a good guy.
Hes probly breeding only a few times so he doesnt 1. over populate the world with unwanted dogs and 2. Not wear his female out w/ pups
I dont know what he does with his dogs. I have only met him a good handful of times..

Why did he not sell them all? If he didn't sell them all, what does he do with the leftover pups? Just keep them forever? Or does he do like most people who "breed every so often" and dump the pups at the shelter? That's overpopulating right there.

I echo what Maple asked above as well.

If Monroe is in La. there are Leo breeders in your state, as well as Texas which is not out of the question driving wise.

You do not sound serious in your pursuit of a GOOD dog, from a GOOD breeder tho so I guess I'll leave it at that.
