How do purebred dogs get their show names?

I was looking at happy pictures of pet quality dogs with their new families on a reputable breeders website and I noticed that a lot of the dogs had "everyday" names that were part of their longer "show names".

Are the new owners just using part of a show name that the breeder picked? Or was it the new owner saying, "I want to call her Penny" that made breeder registered the name as "Dumbly Dore's Penny in the Bank"?

How old is the typical purebred pup when he's named?

Alot of kennels require you use thier kennel name in the pups registered name.
Example...One of my dogs is
Oaklandbays Red Tide....Call name or everyday name is Red. Kennel name being Oaklandbay. I also require my pups carry Oaklandbay somewhere in thier name.

Like Momof7 said, a lot of times the breeder will require you to keep their kennel name as the first word of your dogs registered name. Some people choose to put the dog's call name as part of the longer name and some do not. Most breeders will let you pick the registered/show name, as long as their kennel name is at the beginning.

As far as the time frame, most puppies are registered under their name once they go to their new owners who fill out the paperwork and send it in.

A couple of mine have come with their kennel names, which I've been able to "add to"..
such as, my aussie her kennel name is
Harmonyhill, her reg'd name is Harmonyhill's Hy Jynx
aka Jynx..
My male gsd is Steinwald's Four x Four,,he came out of her "F" litter, and his call name is "Dodge" (my husband had a black dodge truck at the time)
The two I rescued and ILP'd,
are Jakoda's Jagged Edge aka Jag
Jakoda's Bewitchen Sami aka Sami.. Jakoda is the name of my 'place', after my first two gsd's Jake & Kodi,, Sami was named Bewitchen Sami after Samantha in Bewitched, and because she was/is such a WITCH..
I like catchy names when naming my dogs *vbg*

The breeder when registering the litter has a place to give the new owners permission to use their kennel name .... thus , any of my offspring were are to use Hawthorn Hill plus anything they wanted to add. Even with the litters that were only sired by me , I gave permission . My very 1st Golden came pre registered and named as he was the pick of the litter ( by the sire's owner ) ......Say kennel name was Muddy Waters ..... if you have permission to use kennel name , you could register as " Muddy Waters Dirty Duck " and call your dog " Stinky "

My dogs AKC registered name has nothing in common with his call name.
anyway, just like everyone else said.
Ruckus is his call name, but his name is "Innis Destiny Has Spoken"

My 2 were not required to use the kennel name so they are "Black Tear of Cheyene" aka Tira and "Top Notch Gunner" aka Gunner. Both were 'officially' named when we purchased them and filled out the papers.

Riot's registered name was sent off to the CKC from his breeder when I have given her three different choices.

BUT my range was limited.

Riot had to have "Ravenmasque" in his reg'd name b'c that is the kennel that hes from.

Riot was born into the "Summer" themed litter, therefore need to have the word Summer in it.

and b/c his name was going to be Riot I decided to choose

Ravenmasque Summer Riot

as my first option of reg'd names.

The other options for Riot would have been

Ravenmasque Summer Parole
Ravenmasque Summer Patrol

Hehehehe- one of my favorite names ever was for a Basenji:

Ch. Jasiri-Sukari Raider of the Lost Bark

(Pretty fantastic for a breed of dog also known as "the African Barkless Dog).

My own dog's breeder had a phenominal name for one of her puppies:

This was a singleton litter in a Japanese breed-

San Jo Yoko Uno.

We weren't required to use the kennel name with our golden, so her registered name was Anne Tigger Too, call name Tigger.

And yes, some breeders have themes for each litter. Or, they give a name that is derived from the parents' names. For example, my mom's maltese is Ch. Divine's Indecent Scandal, and she was bred a few times to Ch. Marcris Thrill of Victory. Their puppies included Rhapsody's Scandalous Thrill and Rhapsody's Thrill Seeker. Cute!

Ahhhhhh yes, themed litters... I think it's fairly common in show dogs. Many breeders like to encorporate elements of the sire and/or dam's name into the pup's name, especially if the dam and/or sire is an important or popular dog in the breed.

Ilsa's litter was a Beatles litter... in honor of the dam who had a Beatles name. Ilsa is Bruda In My Life Ilsa. My breeder added "Ilsa" to the name, so her call name would be in the registered name. I didn't really care, but that's just how my breeder likes to do things... I think it helps her remember call names of dogs she's sold!

Ronin came with his name... as I got him when he was 18 months old. He is Bruda Sense of Duty. His was a "Sense of" litter. His littermates are Sense of Style, Sense of Courage, etc.

I love coming up with registered names, even though I haven't been able to name either of my two dogs. However, I have permission from the breeder to name my next dog... yippee! (On a list for a working corgi, the breeding will take place in about 18 months or so... soooo excited!)

I filled out my own registered Name....Dixie is my Yorkies 'call name' and her registered name is 'That's how we do it in Dixie'. She's registered w/ AKC. We didn't have to name her after the kennel or anything though....;)
