Actually, the rabies vaccine is null and void if not administered by a vet. You cannot allow your dog to travel outside of South Africa or get it into kennels that require proof of vac.
She gets a signed card from the vet saying that he has provided her with the vaccine to administer and her dogs have been vaccinated by herself.

Found this out today...

Still null and void I'm afraid. They are legal in SA but not as a travel stamp.

I vaccinate every three years. I just have the vets do them at work, though, since I pay just over cost and it is, thus, just as reasonable as it would be if I bought them to administer at home. Also, none of the kennels here will recognize vaccines not given by a vet, so since I do board them, I stick with vet or clinic given vaccines. Silly, but alas..

I am a vet tech, and I give them at work. The vet still does an exam on my dog though. I would not feel comfortable to vaccinate at home. What if the dog had a life threatening reaction at home? No way you could make it to the vet on time. I am not willing to risk that for a few dollars.

Of the dogs that you treat at your office that you do vaccinate how many have you seen have a life threatening reaction?

I work at a clinic. The only vaccine I've given my own pet is a Bordetella. They're due for exams when they're due for a vaccine anyways. My dogs actually get exams more often than vaccines, and always have... even before I worked at the clinic.

We have breeders and others who do buy the vaccines directly from us though.

Not that I'm disbelieving but are we talking life threatening - break out the epi reaction or just reaction? The reason I ask is because I see a ton of dogs in a year and often talk shots during intakes and I have met one, in my entire life where the owner said "got a combo vac with lepto and a rabies shot at the same time and the dog nearly died. No more shots for her." In fact I have probably vaccinated several thousand animals in my life between the barnyard, the kennels, the lot, and the farm and to my knowledge I can't think of one serious reaction in a sheep, goat, cow, cat, bird, horse, donkey, or dog. Feelin mildly under the weather yes, some swelling maybe, but not drop dead, blood pressure drop, throat swelling shut reactions.

I mean it's possible I've just gotten extremely lucky over the years but I thought I'd ask.

Yeah, I was talking about true life threatening reactions. We see a whole lot more reactions like swelling, lethargic, not eating, etc. :)

I have vaccinated my own pets for the last 17-18 years. (With the exception of rabies which must be done by a vet in Georgia.) A case of 25 vaccines plus shipping is usually less than $80 and with as many pets as I have, this is a major savings. I will only order through a company who is very experienced at shipping vaccines, usually Revival Animal Health.

I currently take my dogs in to vaccinate them but I work at a vet so a DHPP costs all of maybe $5, rabies even less if I remember right. When I no longer work in a vet clinic, I will vaccinate my own dogs. Rabies usually has to be done by a vet though.

Hmm, I do a yearly check-up on all the dogs. The bill of yearly check-up + vaccinations comes to about $50-55. The check up on its own is about $32-35. Rabies vaccinations are sometimes made available for free when there are break outs in the area. However they are not administered by a vet. So I am not sure how to approach that either.
