Hi,

My toy poodle has excessive hair growth in her ears, more then normal, according to the vet and what we know from our previous poodle. This has caused numerous ear infections.
She goes to the groomer every four weeks, which is plenty for the rest of her body but not her ears.
Instead of dragging her to the groomers in between I would like to do her ears on my own at home in between.
What tools do I need to pluck her hair and is there anything I need to put in them before or after I do it.
Thanks --Elissa

I'm curious as well, for I have never actually learned how you cut the hair in your dog's ears.

The hair in the ear and canal comes out easily and most can be removed by plucking in with your fingers. I use an ear powder, it helps to dry the hair and easier grasping and for the hair in the ear canal I use a hemostat. Clip a few of the hair with the hemostat and gently turn it, without pulling, and it will pick up all the hair in the canal. After you’ve removed the hair take an ear wash and cotton ball and clean the ear then use a dry cotton ball to dry it. You can find pretty much most of these items at a pet supply like PetCo/PetSmart.

Your welcome! :)

It's sometimes nerve-wracking experience for some when they first try to do it on their own in fear of hurting the dog. It's an unpleasant experience for alot of dogs but sadly one that needs to be done. When using the hemostat remember just to clip a few hairs and when you start to twirl it, it will pick up the rest that's in there just like a cotton candy in a machine.
