Kharma has a war with the mockingbirds.

She's winning

There was a wren in the house the other day. I tried to get her out of the room before she caught it, but she did. Oddly, she didn't kill it -- she held it very softly in her mouth and let me take it from her. It was sopping and scared, but I took it outside and set it in the honeysuckle bush and it fluffed itself up and scooched farther into the bush to dry out. It was gone later, so I assume it was okay.

Squirrels, rabbits, moles, rats, possums, doves, basically any sort of varmint you would find on a farm or in the woods is fair game though. Except skunks. She and Bimmer both turn and walk the opposite direction when they see a skunk.

Shiva was my skunk killer. She only got sprayed once -- the first time.

Strider's most impressive catch was a swallow. They were strafing the field going after bugs and he started coursing them. He zoned in on one bird and followed it through some sharp bends, caught up, and CRUNCH. Popcorn. I felt bad about that, didn't think he'd actually be able to catch one or I wouldn't have let him chase them.
Very impressive. Those swallows are super quick. I remember my dad standing in the middle of the yard trying to swat at one with the tennis racket. It had dive-bombed him when he opened the front door. Needless to say he umm didn't get him, but I swear that swallow was mocking him cause it kept dive bombing him the whole time.

This will give Belle some hope.

The rabbit hides out in our garden (which is fenced off with a chicken wire type fencing) and Belle just sits there and stares into the garden. Brian tells her "belle... Give it up. The rabbit isn't going to just commit suicide and jump into your mouth"

LOL maybe it WILL!!!!
You never know! It only takes one bad decision!

Katalin is still honing her hunting skills - she's abit young and silly you know. But she is quite adept at "treeing" racoons and squirrels. She will chase them up a tree in the yard and just sit there, watching like a fluffy vulture...

I will usually lure her inside with a piece of chicken or get her to chase a toy around instead. If she gets one - meh. Doesn't bother me.

Romy why did the lady come up to your door? she felt the need to speak up for the squirrel or something?

awesome! Thanks. I'm definitely going to give that a shot. Both of them are serious business when it comes to squirrels and rabbits and I've been dying to hunt some with them.
you might also want to hit the public hunting lands AFTER the deer season is over. you might run into some rabbit beagler's that will let you slip on some of their bunnies. if working on your own most public lands have dove fields w/ good weedy edges. the ideal property will have warm season grasses, legumes & viny cover like wild rugosa roses or blackberry brambles. the patches of pine saplings on public land are good for this too.

Since when was a common squirrel being killed by another animal cause for outrage? Some people really need to get a grip on themselves. I fear for our society lol

Speaking fast birds once Lily managed to catch a dove. I have no idea how, as they are fast little birds! She brought it to me very proud of herself and even let Scout eat it. I guess she was feeling charitable that day.

Man if I hunted pheasant Lily and I would own it, she's so good at flushing birds and bringing stuff back to me. Wouldn't that horrify the lab hunters to have a freaking sled dog out there hunting? LOL
I so totally don't hunt though, I leave that to my little bro. :)

In our yard, the squirrels have become nocturnal. Not from my dogs but from the ferals in the back yard. Every night, all night, those squirrels screech and scratch and eat acorns and drop themon the metal roof DIRECTLY ove rour heads in bed. We dont have an attic, just boards then the metal roof pans so it sounds like shot guns going off. Birds get chased from the yard. Pretty much all little creatures are already gond because of the cats, now, when the cats get dumb and decided to enter the front yard, thats when the "murdering" begins! The ferals KNOW I have 6 dogs out there now, and 4 are APBT-

Sh!t dies, it's natural. People need to get over themselves.

Squirrel soup sounds like a good idea. :) And honestly, I'm way more supportive of eating "hunted" animals over farmed ones.

Oh "Gawd!" Next it will be the neighbors' children! Animal control should be called. Your dog is a vicious killer.

How can people be that stupid? Do they really truly not get it that dogs are predatory animals? Death of animals like this is called the fittest survive. It's too bad that doesn't work on humans. That woman isn't fit to survive in a real world. How does she do it?

You can not imagine how many wild rabbits my Lab use to kill. Sometimes she'd eat them, sometimes not. Then she'd throw up. My friend in that neighborhood had a dog that did the same thing. Many mornings after the kids went to school, we'd get on the phone and play a game called, "name that carcass." After it's thrown up, it's a detective game to figure out what it was.

So, is she going to call the authorities on you?:rofl1:

I don't think she'll call the authorities. Just needed to share the horror with someone? lol. She was worried about him eating it too, which I can kind of understand. This is why I worm my dogs though, because who knows how many rats and whatever else they catch and we never find a trace of. Strider LOVES rat. It's his absolute favorite. I blame the frozen/thawed rat I tried giving to our foster python and it wasn't hungry. Puppy Strider got to have it because it was a half pound of meat and organs that I didn't want wasted. He was hooked. lol

It's so ridiculous, animals are animals. Small animals are prey for dogs. I think it's really obvious and a random woman freaking out about it and furthermore telling you how bad it was is so crazy! Fair enough, if you don't want to see it turn away - it can be a little gross if you are not used to it, I guess? That's as far as I would go.

I always have to be really careful with the dogs getting prey here in Florida just in case of snakes. That always worries me a bit.

Not only I'm amused by the woman's reaction, and I also kind of amused by your animal killer stories. :p

Morgan is completely and utterly "bunny blind". Before we had the fence, the rabbits would sun themselves in our yard and Morgan would literally TRIP over them doing zoomies because he never had ANY IDEA they were there. :rofl1: Squirrels on the bird feeder outside our door? No reaction. We even try to taunt him (Where's the squirrel? See the squirrel?) and he just stands there --looking straight past the squirrel-- going, "Wha? Huh??"

ETA: Also, one day I let him outside, and he got halfway off the patio only to stand awkwardly, looking at the ground, and CRYING. Thinking he was hurt, I hurry outside to him. Turns out a sparrow had killed itself by flying into our window, and was just laying there on the ground. As I came outside, Morgan looks at me with this brokenhearted look as if to say, "My friend is hurted! FIX HIM!!!" Poor guy...

Suzie is too slow to catch anything poor girl, but she eats whatever the cat brings in. It's kinda funny when we tell visitors that she eats squirrels, because she's a cute fluffy sweet dog.
