Hi,

Just got a 7 week old brown lab pup.

My GF and I got him home, and he's perfect. In the 2 days we've had him we've got him so he loves his crate, and he responds most of the time to 'come'. He's only had 3 pee pee accidents inside, which doesn't seem so bad considering he's probably pee'd about 30 times since we've had him. Each time I was able to catch it in the act, give an ah-ah and pick him up to put him outside right away. One time he finished outside, and I rewarded.

When we take him for his pee pee breaks at night, he only cries for about 2-5 mins when we get him back in his crate, and then chews on his toys or goes to sleep. He's pretty good at only chewing on his toys too so far. When ever he chews anything he's not suppose to I say no bite and move him. I'm going to rig up a large playpen tonight for just him and his toys, so he can spend time in there playing.

One thing I've gotten paranoid about is Parvo. I know to keep him away from anywhere other dogs could be, so he's confined to my backyard for pee and play. I bought my place 2 years ago, and the previous owner had a couple dogs, but when I got the place I roto-tilled the whole yard and replanted. After reading, I don't think that would make a difference if Parvo was present, so I'm fairly paranoid about that. I know the previous dogs were mostly kept on the other side of the house, and the crazy previous owner had turned the whole backyard into a garden, so I'm thinking (hoping) the dogs weren't aloud in that area.

Anyways, great forum. I'm learning tons.

edit for a question: how often do I water? I usually do it with meals, and a couple times between each meal. Also, he likes to like the water off the grass/clovers (its usually wet) out back. This enough? He pee's at the very least every 2 hours, usually its more like every hour.

Hey,
It sounds like you have a gorgeous lab puppy who is very responsive. It's great that you are getting him to pee outside, the only thing i would mention about parvo is when we got holly we asked our vet straight away if it would be safe to take her in the garden and he said no as we have a lot of foxes in the area and they spread it as well. So I think it might be worth thinking about what kind of animals go in your garden?

Hi and welcome to chazhound! You sound to be doing very god with your puppy and I'm glad you are crate training. As far as Parvo goes I would talk to your vet about when you can get him vaccinated against it so you can start to really get into socializing. For water I always leave water out and never take it away. Some people take it away at night while the pup is being house broken but we never did that with Max.

and the crazy previous owner had turned the whole backyard into a garden,
:p Why was the previous owner crazy? I doubt you have anything to worry about in your garden but I'm not sure, it's possible there is parvo, how long have you had the puppy?

I'll get some pictures up pretty soon. My yard is fenced, so no wild animals get it. The only thing I'm worried about is the dogs that lived here previously, and I've read it lasts in the yard for 5 years. I don't have anywhere else to put him for the potty. I'm sure it will be fine.

Oh!! Congrats! I have a Chocolate Labrador too! They have a lot of energy! So exercise your puppy a lot (especially at 6 months, very active at that age)! And thats good that he is responsive. :) Good luck with him! And what is his name?

Sorry guys, been busy as you can guess.

His name is Cooper. Coup for short. We've started a bit of clicker training, and he responds to come about 80% of the time outside, and 40-50% of the time inside. He's only had 4 accidents inside so far, all #1's; bout one a day. Totally our fault - we were so close to making it yesterday, but my gf and him took a little nap and he went on the floor the split second he woke.

I'm taking him to the Vet tonight for his first wellness exam. Should be fun. His poo has been runny for a couple days. We got a bag of Iams puppy food, but after reading this we stowed it for a bit and snagged a bag of Canidae for him, which he likes. I'm hoping it will harden up the poo a bit. Also got rid of the Iams bisquits for some soft salmon snacks.

So far I'd say everything is going good. Nothing to crazy to report yet.

Congratulations on what sounds like a brilliant puppy! I have never heard that about parvo, but when in doubt, always check with your vet. I leave water out at all times. With a young pup in housetraining, i agree with picking it up during the night and giving it back first thing in the morning. Have fun!

Hello to you and your puppy,:)

The answer to this one is simple - as much as he wants!

You don't have to limit dogs' intake of water, the way you occasionally do with food. You also shouldn't be concerned about only setting out water during planned meal times.

In fact, it's essential to your puppy's health that you have fresh, clean water out for him all the time. Dogs of any age need lots of water to help run body processes like circulation, digestion ,and eliminating waste from the body.

The one case where you might worry about too much water is if your dog suddenly starts to drink much more than usual, or if he seems constantly thirsty. This could be a sign of a serious health problem, so let your vet know if your pet's drinking habits seem unusual or have changed.

Just though you might be interested in this:

Parvovirus is extremely contagious and can be transmitted by any person, animal, or object that comes in contact with a infected dog's feces.

The virus can survive extreme heat and cold for long periods of time, and may remain alive on a surface long after the feces has been removed.

So you can use a solution of one part bleach to thirty parts water to clean areas used by other dogs, and use the solution on the soles of your shoes if you think you've walked through an infected area.

He sounds like a fantastic pup! Really well behaved! But I agree have water available at all times but limit it for a set amount of time beofre bed so he doesn't have an accident in the night.
But only 3 is brilliant, so I wouldn't worry too much, he seems to understand the not inside concept already! Good job
