It seems like everybody has one in the new area I moved into. They're great looking dogs and from what I see well behaved and probably quite affectionate, but is there some reason why everyone has one? It seems for every 5 dogs I see 3 are Goldens, ones a Lab and the other one varies.

Anyone on here have a golden and can let me know the secret to why they're so popular? Not sure what I'm missing out on, but feel al ittle weird owning the only black dog in my new neighbourhood.

Goldens aren't my kind of dog, but I can see why they're so popular. They're large, easy-going dogs who don't typically show human or dog or predatory aggression and are common enough that acquiring one doesn't require you import one from Slovenia or wait 14 months for a new litter. Given a choice of the most popular breeds, they'd be the one I'd pick. Labs are just too territorial and Rottweilers have too much baggage.

Goldens are people pleasers....they're very easy going and trustful. Once they learn, they never go back. I've never known a Golden owner who would never have another one.

I 100% agree, I will have any type of dogs that comes my way but there will always be room for a Golden. Casey is everything I could ever ask for.

This was written years ago by Marcia Schlehr. What is your Golden to you " ....A Golden can be a fluffy wind-up teddy bear with shoe button eyes and your best towel clutched in his teeth ;nobility reclining on a grassy bank ;a white faced old sportsman still keen for the whistle of the wings. 'in spring a golden will put mud on your carpets ; fur all over your best navy blue , and a flowering bloom in your heart/ A golden flame of color against dark summer covert, the spray of surf sent flying , peace sprawled against the cool earth. He is complacence wearing a seeing guard harness, pride with a bird in his mouth , dignity wanted his tummy rubbed , elegance working in the swampland. A Golden has the understanding of a saint, the patience of Buddha, the eagerness of a kid at the circus , and a tail that challenges perpetual motion. Having a Golden Retriever is never knowing where your shoes are at any given moment ; having your neighbors call you up because he's sleeping in the snow instead of his kennel house ; keeping cups off the coffee table because of wild tails, and being not quite sure f your paragon would decimate a burglar or fix him a cuppa tea and show him where the best silver is kept. When you have a Golden , you get up a little earlier, spend more time driving a little further, bring home less taxable , and have a hundred times the enjoyment of your neighbors who do their gambling at more common places. Someone with a Golden is instant acquaintanceship. Your veterinarian wishes that all his patients were Goldens, and you wish that you were half as great as your Golden thinks you are " .......I sent this home with all my pups......

labs are the most popular dogs in america right now and goldens are second, which sucks in terms of byb's but i think there is a reason for this. In terms of most people especially first time dog owners these two breeds are usually a great fit. there large but not huge, energetic but not border collie intense there intelligent but also people pleasers. for most people they are a great dog

Labs became popular (I believe) 15 years ago, unfortunately, most likely due to the fact that not only are they absolute angels, but they're smart, good-looking and just in general, perfect (I'm biased). There are way too many BYB of labradors, which greatly saddens me, because they're are wrecking the breed; turning them into huge, aggressive dogs that don't look or act ANYTHING like a lab should. I hope and pray that the majority of the labrador breed will go back to being of medium size, sweet (NOT aggressive, AT ALL), with a nice otter tail and floppy ears.

Goldens are great family dogs, very trainable and don't have the protective drive of a rott or GSD. So they're ideal for a suburb or city. Not to mention the fact that a well-groomed golden is absolutely gorgeous! *sniffle* I still miss my Golden Girl, even though it's been nearly three years since she passed.

They''re really good dogs for the first time owner and family life. Personally they are not my breed of choice by any means but I still love them and adore working with them.

goldens arnt really my dog. I prefer something a little more boisterous. and i dont like their look much. but whatever works.
Its the same here, but with acd's after we got buster i felt like i was part of a club. lol. 4/5 of the dogs in my area are ACD's and ACD mixes

I'm glad there's a reason to the golden fever out there. I figured they were a good dog, but just not sure if the majority of my neighbourhood has gotten a golden because of the facts or because of hearsay on the breed. As far as great dogs go, walking through the park in my area (which backs onto many yards) we have had many goldens come running to the fence and barking at Maddie and I in a very aggressive way, which I wasn't sure if I should expect that in a golden or not.

I guess I just saw a lot of them around here (labs too) and wasn't sure if the people here knew why they got a golden and wanted to see if it was a stereotype or if it was true.

Gem , I don't know if you remember my frequent visitor that came to visit us for about 2 months. Lived across the highway and about 2 miles away. I thought she was a dane mix... but ended up being mastiff and Shepherd. Was a huge, goofy bunch of love. Looked a lot like Zeus, but brindle. Would have taken her in in a heart's beat.!! She lived here for 2 days until I finally found the owner. Only problem was I was keeping Elin's Hunter at the time and both of them in my twin bed was a little too cramped !
