just wondering if anyone can give me some information on french mastiffs like tempermant, health probs if any how big do they get ie. weight for both male and female. are they good guard dogs, easy to train etc.
i have a rottie x pitbull and hes great he was really easy to train hes not stubborn at all has never ran off. if he does get out of the yard he waits for me on the front steps to come home from work.
are french mastiffs anything like that?

oh and btw do they really drool as much as the one in turner and hooch? lol

LOL! NOTHING drools as much as the Hooch! I think they must have kept that poor dog drooling on screen by showing him food.

If you'll go to www.molosserdogs.com you can find good descriptions of the different Mastiffs. I really like their information as it isn't the standard drivel from the associations and kennel clubs - it's usually a mix of standards along with actual observations from experienced owners.

Nope, different. Neopolitans are a seperate breed, and are much larger with more wrinkles.

Oh...Renee's comment threw me off, because we have a great-granddaughter of Hooch's that comes in to board occasionally, and she's listed as a Neo. Mastiff.

french mastiff is also known as Dogue De Bordeaux (correct me if I missed a letter or two) and the neopolitan mastiff is also known as the Italian Mastiff. French Mastiff = Hooch (Turner and Hooch), Neopolitan = Fang from Harry Potter (the giants dog). just what I have heard...both dogs drool but not like Hooch, both dogs are very sweet and gentle but also great guard dogs. and the french or dogue des bordeaux has the largest (proportionatly) head in the dog world. I have met several of both but other than how big they get which you probably already know from the links others have posted.

I’ve only got 7 months of experience with one DDB, but here goes.
-Temperment- very laid back…. when not being a normal puppy. Great with kids (I have a 5,3, and 1 year old).
-Health problems- there are no specific known problems other than the typical concerns with giant breeds. The DDB Society has just started keeping cause of death records.
-Weight – for the adult weights females are typically around 120#, males are heavier and their weighs vary more amongst individuals..
-They are decent guard dog. They are very good protection dogs as this is what they were bread to do for years.
-Training- I’d give my girl a 6 on a scale of 1-10. Smart and trainable, but stubborn. She’ll sometimes give me a “make me” look when asked to do something and she rarely listens to my wife (they both deserve equal blame here)
-I’ve never had her get away from me, but she’d much rather be inside with the people than out in the yard.

As for the drool.... in the movie they applied the drool like makeup. They will leak a little after taking a drink, but they wont drool all the time. However, she does have the uncanny ability to identify dark work pants when you are on the way out of the house to give you a nice sliming.

ROFL! Ah, Steve - you're the only other person I've run across who uses the term "sliming" for what our dogs do to us. Fila aren't champion droolers - are actually pretty mild - but they do know how to time it exactly right so you can't leave the house without at least one slime track. I guess it's some sort of Mastiff parting gift

Oh those Mastiff parting gifts, as Renee put it. Kona is great at doing it when her mouth is dirty. I don't mind it, but my stepson has a fit. I thought my neighbor was going to have a heart attack the first time she met Kona and got a little drool on her. You'd think it was poison! I was laughing.

Can you imagine the poor breeders who have 4 or 5 of these dog living inside their house if they really did drool like that!!!

I can see the headline now...

BORDEAUX BREEDER SAVED FROM NEAR DROWNING AFTER HOUSE BECOMES FLOODED WITH DOG DROOL!! "I will be drilling drainage holes in my house to prevent this from happening in the future" said the breeder after the incident :D

Also here is a link about health problems in the breed BORDEAUX HEALTH

They are beautiful dogs.. I would love to own one some day. I am a big fan of Neopolitean mastiffs as well... I would recommend you just doing as much research as possible on the breed. Read books, check out the club's website, or even go to a rare breed show to check them out..
And before you do decide to buy, please research the breeder VERY well..

Alot of mastifss are on the ban lists so make sure about that.

I think the bull and english mastifs are on the ban list in Ontario because they are a "Bully Breed"
