Also, I have always wondered what the first person who thought this up was thinking. I guess the hot weather thing makes a little sense, but in general if you take two breeds of dogs that are known for shedding like crazy, being food obsessed, and being very stubborn in addition to notoriously hard to housebreak; what do you suppose you are going to get? I say this and I like both breeds, but I would think if you were crossbreeding you would want to try to improve some of this stuff.
To my knowledge, puggles were mostly based on the fact they're cute. It's mostly an aesthetic thing. Personally, I don't like the look of extreme brach breeds and so the fact the puggle has a more moderate build, and in particular head shape, is something that is desirable to me. They are headstrong though and they shed and they're high energy, but I've really enjoyed the ones I've gotten to be around. They were all very happy go lucky and sweet dogs.

I've never met a Puggle that I thought was cute... but every single one I've met has had ginormous bug eyes and an underbite. I haven't liked the temperaments of any of the ones I've met either.

I think the one Fran posted is super, super cute. When, like Laurelin said, they look like little mastiffs, lol.
Mostly, though, they're not my cup of tea, and they're not all that attractive to me.
I also fail to see how crossing a pug and a beagle is improving on either breed.

I don't think they are. On top of that, every single one I've seen has been overweight, which doesn't help it look any cuter. lol.

Fran I have never seen one that looks like that. Even the nicest of ones I have met don't look as nice as the ones Xandra posted. (not talking temperaments) Most look like they were made from spare parts.
Ha! Have you ever seen a Dandie Dinmont? Talk about being made from spare parts!

Betcha it started with an oops! litter, and somebody had a light bulb go on over his head. :lol-sign:

Why are there never any good cookies around here!

Those must be the ones that have trickled down to Southern Alberta... They're the only ones i see... I've only met a handful but they've all been horrendously ugly and evil.

A Pug fancier i once knew always said "Whoever made up the puggle didn't think it through... Since when is taking the pug with it's lack of doggy common sense and crossing it with the beagle with it's desire to follow it's nose wherever it goes a good idea? You just end up with one very lost, very confused, very ugly dog."

I just came from the humane society vet clinic. I saw a dozen dogs being led out and back in from getting exercise all imo better looking than any puggle I have seen. I just don't see the point of it.

I understand people not liking designer dogs, but I don't get the thought that they're hideous dogs.
^^^ This. I don't like the *idea* of people creating designer dogs, especially when they falsely promote them as legitimate "new breeds", or hypoallergenc, or better/healthier than purebreds in general, create finernails-on-a-blackboard sounding cutesy names for these mixed breeds, and register them with created registries that have no meaning. It's all so deceptive.

But I can't go there as far as taking the whole fiasco out on the dogs themselves. Some designer mixes look hideous, some look cute -- but the dogs themselves didn't create the hype that surrounds them and they aren't falling for it either. :p

Also, I have always wondered what the first person who thought this up was thinking. ^^^ And this!! I'm guessing that what another poster said is most likely ... the original "Puggles" started as an oops litter, somebody came up with a cutesy name and marketing idea, and others jumped on that bandwagon. Because those two breeds mixed on purpose doesn't make sense to me at all ... for exactly the reasons DrMom said.

I think (and I'm not referring to anyone here, just some people I've talked to) feel so negatively about the irresponsible breeding and the concept of "designer" dogs, that those negative feelings are partially transferred to the dogs themselves.

Which is ridiculous, if you think about it. The dog has no idea how it was bred.

Not from me. there are TONS of purebred dogs I think are hideous, I personally don't find too many breeds "OMG SO SO SO SO cute, must have OMG" lol.

I think a lot of designer dogs are pretty cute, depending on the dog themselves, offcourse. As most designer breeds dont always look like the next. the picture of the "puggle" fran posted is down right adorable. We have the worlds cutest "morkie" that comes to work, I adore her, she is Tennyyyy and so cute.

I'm just not big on a lot of breeds.

I find them pretty adorable! I've only seen them from afar, while on a walk and such, so I don't really know what type of personality they have.
