Neither, really, but a Pom if I had to choose. GSDs are just too big. Also, I realize that coming from a collie/terrier person, this may sound rich, but I dislike the sharpness of the shepherds. When a collie has a hissy fit or a terrier goes bonkers about something, it's a sort of performance piece. When a GSD alerts on something, it has a rather nasty authoritative attitude. I always think it must be like living with a cop who's forever thinking "that's not right, I must put that back into place" and it would drive me crazy.

Plus there's the shorter lifespan of big dogs and the heartbreaking health problems, and I think a Pomeranian would be more fun. Plus, you know, I've always wanted a dog I could take as a carry-on on flights.

Funny! :D What a great description - and I know what you mean. My Jerry used to have a way of looking at people, well, specifically men he didn't know, if they were walking towards me or anywhere close to my general area, that made MY hackles stand up. It was never something we taught him, just that inherent guarding nature.

But I've got to say, of all the breeds I know, GSDs are by far the most noble, loyal, big-hearted breed (again - this is just in my own experience). They have a calm serenity about them that brings a tear to the eye. And a goofiness, surprisingly, that makes you laugh like a child. They are a magnificent dog. I hope to be lucky enough to have one in my life again one day, they are awesome. :hail:
