The only name I have picked out is for a red husky. I don't think I will ever get one but I think the name Cheska would fit perfectly.

I don't have a list, but I also don't intend to have too many more dogs in my life (assuming my current two live a good long life!). I do believe though, at some point we may think about another lab (some day)-and would be a female. I think the name Zsu Zsu is fun (from It's a Wonderful Life).

I come up with names all the time, but I don't know if they will ever work for a dog I get. I used up my favorite sight-houndy name on the female whippet mix I fostered before Meg and thought I was going to keep (Sasha), so with Meg, I didn't want to use a "keeper" name since I wasn't sure I'd keep her.

I had Jasper set aside for my intended male BC. Since it's already in use here (which I know doesn't actually matter) I started thinking of others and switched it to Gambit.

With my eyes now set more on a small rescue dog for agility, I'm in love with the name Bizzy.

But as others said, you kind of have to meet the dog first.

If I have any future dogs, it depends on the breed as well as their individual personality. I kind of like names that fit the "nationality." LOL. But yeah...I have a mental bank of names, but subject to change. If I ever get a Poodle, I was thinking for a girl, Simone. And for a boy, Francois. pronounced (Frans-swa)sort of. Maybe. Or Pierre. If it's another Chihuahua, maybe Jose`'s "middle name," Miguel... or Javier. (I think that's how you spell it. (Pron. Hah-vee-er.) I think I've got that right. LOL. Or if it's a girl Chi, Pilar maybe. I'm not sure. If it's a German breed, a German name. (although I didn't name Lyric a German name) LOL. German boy names are ugly...hard to find a good one.

I also like musical terms, hence, Lyric. Most of those musical terms are Italian. I like Cadence or Allegro, Arabesque, Celesta, Minuet...Hey! How about Encore? Not pretty sounding, but what meaning! Some of those are too fancy sounding or too long, I guess.

I like too, the idea of words that imply small....for a Chihuahua. Demi Tas. (Demi for a nick name)

I like seeing all the different name ideas. It is fun to choose a name for a new pet. But sometimes very difficult to decide.

Yes. For males I have Bruno and Clifford (both named after members of my favorite bands) and for a female I have Halo.

Nope--I can't imagine naming a dog before you get to know it and its personality!

The other thing is I never intend to have anything other than rescue dogs, so if the dog comes with a name, I have a hard time changing it. When you pull a dog from a shelter, it's lost everything it has--the only thing it has left is its name.

If you change a dog's name, they can get use to it fast. Just feed them the best thing ever and say the new name a split of a second before feeding the treat. LOL. The dog will come to LOVE his new name. Using his new name right before wonderful things; a walk, being given a toy or tasty bone or playing a game he likes, being affectionate, feeding....all the good things will make his new name have real meaning. LOL.

Chances are, if the dog were mistreated in the past (and lots of dogs are) or scolded using it's name, (Fido!!! NO!!! smack, stomp, yell, scruff, alpha roll) the old name may have very negative conotations to it. I've seen some dogs cringe at the sound of their name because their owners punish them in association with their name. Of course, not all shelter dogs were mistreated. But a lot have been.

Dogs learn to recognize their name but they don't attach a deep intellectual meaning to it I don't think...like we do. So anthropomorphism in this case, I don't think is applicable. In a new, loving home, the dog doesn't think about what he lost. (which may have been a rotten life and not much fun in a shelter) He is probably thinking about what is happening in the present, which is a better, more loving and happy life. So, if you do want to change a shelter dog's name, I don't think you should worry about any negative perception by the dog.:)

I keep a mental list of names that I *like*.... of course, my cardi is already named. :p
The next breeding with a possible dog for me won't be for another 2 years min... But the name is going to be a play off his grandfather whom I'm totally in love with.

Oh I know all that. We actually contemplated changing Lucy's name when we got her, but we couldn't come up with a good reason to. She knew her name and didn't seem to have any negative connotation to it, so there was no reason to. It just seemed easier for her to leave it the same.

We met her as Lucy, got to know her as Lucy...it would have felt weird to change it.

Well, Lucy is a very nice name. Yeah....if you like the name and you don't have any reason to change it, might as well not. I was thinking more like if someone doesn't like the name the dog comes with or for some other reason, it isn't a bad thing to change it.

I have the 'perfect names list' that I plan on using, but let's use my new pup for example. I *knew* I had the perfect name for her until I had her a few days, then changed the whole thing around - call name and reg. name. My list is a guide, but often I build from there with something I never thought of ...

I have a list of names, most of them boy names though. Quite frankly I tend to prefer girl dogs so that never works out. I have no girl names picked out at all. Mia came to me as Gayla and it took a while to change her name. Summer, Rose, and Bernard all came named and kept their names. Of course BERnard isn't really what we call Nard anymore. ;)

I really do want a male dog (either bc or papillon) named Zell though. That's about the only one.

All of our rescues have always come with names we didnt like.

One was "snapper" and another was "rudy"... they were humane society cats anyway so I doubt their names were ever really used... so we just changed them. I would consider keeping a rescues name if I liked it or it fit but I know my next dog will be a Biewer from a breeder.

Armani & Elle's breeders asked if we had names in mind and started calling them by their names at their house, so they were used to them before they came... I like this situation best if possible.

I do have a list and yeah, I sorta figure you have to meet the dog to know what to pick, but I'm 99% sure I know exactly what my next dog will be named... I even have the registered name picked out to match.

Auggie was one of my three top choices I had in mind when I went to pick out my pup. It was fate he was going to end up Auggie though, and it totally suits him.
