Diarhea...vets appt tomorrow

our 2 yo (almost) Lab has been having diarhea on and off since Saturday evening. it was very bad, watery stuff Saturday...we gave pepto and made sure she was drinking water. Sunday it was trying to get solid, but not quite...again, plenty of fluids and some food. Today, she's a combination of the past two days...the first bit will be gooey, but not to bad and as she's finishing up it's just watery *twice now with blood* discharge. they're going to the vet tomorrow (we tried to get them in saturday but they were closing at noon and said there were emergencies and she should be ok til Tuesday morning). our youngest, 10 wks, is fine...no diarhea, drinking, eating normally etc. I gave her pedialyte and some Immodium AD.

i was told rice and chicken (boiled) would help stop it as well. is this true? is there something besides her dry food that i can give her to eat so she won't continue having diarhea??? i want her to eat, but i know she's getting plenty of fluids in the meantime.

btw, there is an intestinal virus going around...supposedly...nothing to serious according to second hand vet comments, but may require antibiotics. guess we'll find out tomorrow

If it were my dog, it would get clear liquids only until you get to the vet.

No food, rest the gut.

cool. hopefully mine will get something similar, or maybe be better by then (cross fingers). i've been giving Immodium AD and pedialyte and she's firmed up quite a bit. i tried to give her food, but it came back out within a half hour or so...not firm, but not NEARLY as bad as saturday/sun/and earlier today. no more food til vet check even though i know she's hungry. i've been giving her 7 - 11 fluid oz of pedialyte every hour to make sure she's getting her fluids.
Gunner isn't sick, but he loves the smell of the immodium and likes pedialyte. is it ok for him to have a little in case what she has is catching?

kaopectate works too. I used to use it just on horses, but i recently found out that you can use it on people too so I assume you could use it on dogs too.

I hope everything goes ok for her, but one thing about Immodium...it's made to "plug up" things and diahrrea is usually the body trying to get rid of some sort of poison in it's system. It might make for a cleaner house, but it might end up backfiring for your dog. Without knowing what's wrong, I can't say for sure, but I never take Immodium myself for just that reason. I'd rather it all gets out of my system ASAP.

back from vet's appt. Gunner got his shots and dewormer and he's fine. Tira got dewormer (vet found 1 hookworm egg), Otomax (for her ears) and Amtoral for her diarhea. he said he doesn't know of any intestinal viruses that may be going around, so that was good. he gave a 24 hr supply of the Amtoral tablets (3 every 8 hrs) and said we could give her some bread, rice or anything bland after the second round. hopefully she'll be firmed up by then and can keep food in (or out as a solid :) ). no dewormer until the Amtoral is gone and she's getting over the diarhea. she had her anal sacs exreted as well...apparently they were full. the vet seems to think the tablets will get rid of the diarhea, but, if for some reason they don't then he wants to do bloodwork and see if it's a food allergy or something else. hopefully it won't come to that.

btw....can you do "anal excretion" from home? i mean, i know how to do it, but is it better done by a vet?

*Tira had her first solid, though small, poop this evening.......YAY! maybe it's finally getting better.*

LabBreeder...did you mean "Amforal"? If so, once her poop is ok, stop giving it to her. If she isn't pooping at all, stop giving it to her. Amforal is a mighty powerful drug and should be used sparingly. Hopefully your Vet told you this already.

that's it...you know how dr's write...LOL you can barely read it sometimes....:)
all he really told us was give her 3 tablets every 8 hours and start feeding bland foods after the second dose. she had some small "pooplets" rofl...that were solid...not a big poop, like she usually does. but she hasn't been eating either, until later this evening. so far, no diarhea though.

I agree........I saw a true story about a boy that ate a piece of raw hamburger........he got ecoli virus from it.......his mom gave him something similar and it backfired and he almost died.

The doctor on the show said it was worsened by the anti-diareah meds. Because the boy could not rid his body from the germ. The meds kept it inside.

I for one will not give such meds unless already confirmed and diagnosed by a vet. :)

I wouldn't give her the 3 tabs every 8 hrs if she hasn't had a bowel movement inbetween doses. I wouldn't give them to her at all (after the initial dose) unless she has more loose stool. Really, with this stuff...a little dab will do ya. If you keep giving it to her as directed, you could totally block her up. It's not the kind of drug you give "til gone".
Sounds like she is on the mend with her "Pooplets"....:D

For the treatment of bacterial enteritis in dogs (caused by organisms
susceptible to Kanamycin) and the symptomatic relief of the associated
diarrhea....
Contents: Kanamycin activity (as the sulfate) -------------- 100 mg
Bismuth subcarbonate ----------------------------- 250 mg
Activated Attapulgite ---------------------------- 500 mg
Usual Dose: 1 tablet/20lbs of body weight every 8 hrs. For dogs 10 lbs.
1/2 tablet/8hrs. A loading or initial dose of twice the above amounts
may be used.

That is all I know about Amforal.

sorry :) "pooplets" was the best i could come up with. LOL

Ok, so now that we have non-diarrhea action i should skip her 3am dose and see what happens? i don't want to block her up, but i also know she's been miserable not getting anything to eat in a day and a half. granted she could loose a few pounds, but not this way! :( poor hungry baby girl! i know i hate it when i get diarrhea and can't eat. i mean, she's playing and doing normal stuff but she'll lay on the couch after they've finished "romping" and get this "hungry" look in her eyes...like she's begging for food.
i just started giving her bread...i figure that's as bland as it gets...and she's done good with it. no poop, but no runs either.

Yep...honestly, I would skip the 3 a.m. dose. Is she not to be fed for 24 hrs? Sorry...I missed that part. I saw where they said to put her on a bland diet, though.
I used to work in a kennel and Amforal was used a lot. We always gave strict orders not to repeat the dosage if there was no stool or if the stool was normal. Vet advised.
Pooplets was too cute!

Here's a link on Amforal for you: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=0&cat=1451&articleid=1430

lmao...it was, wasn't it. :)

well, originally i was told by some chaz members to let her stomach rest and not feed her just make sure she stayed hydrated...which i did. the vet said to wait until second dose before giving her some rice/bread or something equally bland to make sure it would come out firm before putting her back on her regular food.

well, the good news is she's not showing any signs of toxicity....i think i may be taking her out to much, kind of expecting her to poop to prove she's ok, i guess. :) she walks around looking at me like i'm nuts because she already had diarrhea once as we were leaving the vet (before meds) and pooplets this evening after meds. she might not have anything left in her to go. i know it takes a while for food to digest, even if it is just bread...so i guess i'll have to wait for better poop tomorrow morning. *sigh* i wanted good poop tonight! lol:p

Just to answer your question.. Yes you can release her anal glands from home.. but I personally WOULDNT. Its very smelly and best left up to the experts.

good lord knows it's smelly! lol...and she does not like it being done either. she wasn't bad, but she squirmed and tried to hunch her butt underneath her and she groaned when he did it...poor baby.

i've been giving her bread, and bread soaked in water (to make sure she's getting fluids still) and some dry food. so far there has been no diarrhea or firm poop. i'm hoping it will be digested and settled by morning so i can get an idea of how it's going. i just hope she's not plugged up after those pills the vet gave...there's still 6 left, just in case she is runny tomorrow and i have to give her another dose or two.

wish us luck! (mainly her... :) )
