please help. we adopted a 12 month old beagle about 6 weeks ago and hes brilliant in every way except he still excessivly wets overnight. its not every night and sometimes he can go for 3/4 days without wetting, but when he does he nearly floods the kitchen. we take him out twice a day for a long walk and weve been controlling how much water he drinks but hes still doing it. hes quite good in the house but every now and then its as if he cant be bothered going outside and just cocks his leg wherever he is ! we have to leave the back door open all day just incase. and obviously its getting cold now !

Congrats on your new dog! I've heard that beagles take longer to housetrain than most breeds. I think he just doesn't quite grasp the concept yet. I'd give him a few more weeks before you start worrying. My dog took a little over 2 months before he was fully housetrained.

when he pees outside do you get all excited and happy? YOU SHOULD
and give him a treat for being a GOOD BOY !
and when he pees in house say BAD DOG in a mad voice, do not hit him or rub his nose in pee - that is cruel
he will soon learn that peeing in house does not please you!
and dogs aim to please their owners

hope this helps

I've always heard that Beagles are kind of stubborn, and that hounds are harder to housetrain, so your problem may be partly beyond your control. Some dogs are easier to housetrain than others, and many people who have dogs who trained easily don't quite understand. I know I didn't after 2 dogs who were perfect in the house with little to no effort on my part. It's only with my 3rd, a sweet but bullheaded collie mix, that I've realized just how hard it can be.

It sounds as if you've already established a feeding/walking schedule that gives him ample opportunity to relieve himself outside when he needs to. I think you need to reduce his freedom in the house. At night, if he's confined to the kitchen and relieves himself there, fence off half the kitchen and see if that stops him. If it doesn't, reduce the space again. Crating him, or leashing him to your bed are also ways to keep him confined to an area in which he doesn't feel comfortable relieving himself. I keep my dog in my bedroom at night, because she regards it as her den and she won't do anything there. Find your dog's den, make sure he's had a good walk before bed, and then put him in his den. It takes time to establish a good habit, and he may never be 100% trustworthy throughout the house, but at least you'll be able to close the back door. Hope it works out.

I guess you need to do some housebreaking. They're a little bit stubborn sometimes but they're pretty trainable. Get some of his pee and place it in the area where you want him to pee. Let him small that area repeatedly especially during times when he usually pees. Observe this, before your dog pees, he usually smells the floor or the place around him after a while he does his thing. It will take some time and lots of patience but I'm sure you'll get him to do his thing on that exact spot. Thats what I did with my beagles. You just need to have a lot of patience.
