Could someone get any dumber?

My boyfriends brother just moved out of his parents house, with his girlfriend. They moved into a small, 1 bedroom apartment.

They have been talking about getting a dog. The breed in mind was a boston terrier, but all of them are too expensive. They go to the Phoenix animal shelter and pick up a BORDER COLLIE!

Why in the world would someone force a border collie to live in such small spaces with no yard at all? And both of them work full time.

To no surprise, they just announced that "joon" has to go. Know why they are giving her up? Because she "is too high energy, and she doesnt like being left alone". Well SURPRISE SURPRISE!!

Now they are thinking about getting an ACD. Guess they didnt learn the first time.

Why would any shelter give a larger, very active dog to someone who lives in a small apartment??

Money, probably. And the possibility of emptying a kennel.
Did they do any kind of breed research before they went to the shelter? I know how hard it can be to say no to those little faces, but, there's something to be said for informed decisions. I hope they take the time to really think about what they're getting into before another spur-of-the-moment purchase.

If they want a pet that is happy being left home alone....tell them to get a goldfish....

NO dog, no matter what size, is going to like being left home alone all the time.

Hey we took Maverick home to an apartment and it was all good. I was a student and steve worked but we made it work. Just long, long walks and lots of time at the dog park. We took a test to adopt him and it was fine. They liked that we lived near the beach.

It's not bad to have a big dog in a small place .... if you take the time to exercise them. We live in an apartment but we have a nice little fenced in park behind us that I take Teddy to for a couple hours each day. We play fetch, he sniffs around, chases birds lol. Also once a week I have been walking him to the dog park which is a 30-40 minute walk each way and then he plays for an hour or so :D

But if you are just going to sit on your but and expect teh dog to entertain itself you are not going to be a happy camper. have you told them what a bad idea it is to get an ACD

Not sure if I was in la la land or something but I didn't see this the first go round...try to encourage them to not get another dog. Go get them an AKC breeds book or something and let them do some reading and tell them to ask you your opinion. It shouldn't be hard for them to do.

Better yet, tell them to get a cat.

Has anyone besides me caught this part? I dont think they should get any kind of dog. Thats not fair to the dog no matter how much excercise they need. If they were willing to do the work of having a dog, then it would be fine. But can you tell me of a breed that likes to be left alone?

Uggggh being a border collie owner and lover, THAT POOR DOG!! I know my girl would go NUTS if I didn't spend time with her. She gets upset when I'm gone too long and gets extremely grumpy when she doesn't get enough exercise (follows me around, scowls at me, and moans). Border Collies aren't dogs that can handle going out a few times a day to go to the bathroom and getting the occasional pat on the head. They need more than that.

Have they rehomed Joon already?

If they still have her, could you PM me with a little bit of information on her? I know a person who is looking for a BC and would be happy to forward info to her.

The problem is that they dont have the time to take care of her properly. The other reason why they are getting rid of her is because she pees on the floor.

They have been told to get a smaller breed.

Been told by whom to get a smaller breed? I would tell them not to get any. Especially not a smaller breed which has a smaller bladder.

His parents told him to get a smaller breed.

They will get a dog no matter who tells them not to.

Suggest to them to get a retired racing greyhound.

They are accustomed to spending much of the day crated, so that's not an issue, and due to that they become house trained very quickly.
