A girl on my chihuahua forum made a post saying that the way to tell the difference between a purebred and a mixed breed is a to look at the color of their gums. Purebreds always have pink gums, and mixed breeds always have black spotted gums:rolleyes: So, if your purebred has pink and black gums, they are actually mixed with something else! Her vet told her this, and she trusts her vet. Her vet also told her to breed her 3lb chihuahua (I made a post about this under breeding).

She won't listen to me that this is obviously false information, and now a whole bunch of other people believe this as well.

Just wanted to give everyone a good laugh!

The need for DNA testing would be gone if it were that easy to tell! Ahh, I can't wait to see this girl's reply in her thread... I've argued back and forth like 4 times now about this. I just told her that her vet is seriously misinformed.

lol! My 2 AKC chihuahuas (Rylie and Chloe) are both mixed breeds.... while Madison (from questionable breeding) is purebred for sure because of those pink gums. Hehe :D

This is what she said:

"you can tell if your chi or any dog for that matter is purebred by looking at their gums. black and pink gums are a mixed breed all pink gums are pure."

"my vet was the person who told me about the gums. i called about the black spotting and he said that that has something to do with their color. but that if there are huge amounts of black with the pink then they are mixed."

"my vet was the one who told me this. and that they have the dna test to make sure 100% but you can look at the gums also. domino has lots of black in his coloring yet he has all pink gums and a friend of mine has a all black purebred pit and she has all pink gums. yet all the mixed breeds i have seen had mixed. i trust my vet. "

LOL!

Anyone noticed how so far the responses on here are totally opposite? That the mixes have pink gums and the purebreds have the mottled?

I wonder what it means if your dog has pink gums, but black lips? Purebred of questionable heritage? :lol-sign:
With my poochies, 4 who are mixes (Aurora, Ranger, Cider and Nova) do have black spotted gums. Which is funny when you think that all but Cider got thier black from a purebred Sibe. (Who also had a black tongue)
Dakota, purebred Sibe, has black gums.
Babylon must be a purebred Alaskan Husky.
Gremlin, Cheyenne, and Sierra all must be purebred Alaskan Inuit Border Huskies, lol.
