choosing a dog breed

We might be getting a second dog. We have a 6 year old female papillon. She weighs 12 pounds. She is an alpha dog and doesn't really get along well with dogs her size or slightly larger. She likes larger dogs that are mellow.

My mom likes small dogs and my dad likes large dogs. I would prefer a larger dog. Shedding isn't a problem. Anything from non-shedding to a lot of shedding is fine. My mom doesn't like dogs who drool a lot. We would prefer dogs with lower excercise, grooming, training, energy needs. We take our papillon out three times a day. Morning, the middle of the day, and at night. We would like a dog that, as an adult, would fit ok to fit into this schedule.

Room, inside or out, isn't a problem. We have 1 acre on the lake and a very large house. We would also like a dog that can tolerate traveling back and forth to and from our cottage (3 hr trip each way) about once a month on average.

I would recommend you go to a pound. That way you can find an adult dog (so you know that it will have a mellow temperment) that your dog gets along with and go from there. Big dogs mean big puppies and I worry that a large breed puppy might be too much for a little papillon and that your dog could get hurt by accident simply due to puppy over-exuberance. Not only that but it sounds like your dog would have a low tolerance for puppy behaviour anyways and would do better with an adult.
