The "tool" was being abused by those who are no longer on chaz, having left voluntarily.

To "punish" everyone for the misdeeds of a few isn't really the best way to go about this.
There are people here that I only get to "chat" to, in chat, because other instant messengers don't work on their computer/whatever. So please don't drag your heels fixing it. I realize you have other demands on your time, but I know the people who frequent chat would appreciate you getting it set up quickly. Not to say we expect it immediately. :)

Look, Chat was being abused on several different fronts. Some of which make me not want to EVER bring it back. It blows my mind how a bunch of "adults" act just because they are on the other end of a computer and have full anonymity.

I haven't punished anyone.... I put a temporary end to a tool that was being abused and used in a way that it was not intended for. Is it the software's fault? Of course not. It's the never the tool, but those who wield it.

The new tool will have much more control, logging and therefore "accountability" built into it. As far as a time frame, well, when it's done it's done. I am certainly not in any rush to bring it back!
I am sorry you feel this way. I really enjoy chat and its likely my favorite feature of this site. If you do have a time frame can you please share it with us. If its going to be a long time perhaps someone computer savvy on this board can make as an interm one.

As for a suggestion...
I don't know if the old one can come back. There were no 'loop holes' to be abused etc etc. The old if it ain't broke don't fix it lol. Perhaps someone can ask Chazhound where he got the old one from, it worked wonderfully and the mods had 'power' in it, and people couldn't use eachother's names.

This. One major Chazzer banned, another left. I think that's enough "punishment" for the rest of us. I'll miss them.

On another note, I can happily set up an IRC chat on a server for folks in the interim, especially if MT is going to flit about on our chat. It would require downloading an IRC client, but otherwise it works much like Chaz chat, as Chaz chat works on an IRC framework.

I found the reply from MT to be rather sad, as Chat is one of my favorite things about this site and to be honest, I doubt I'd visit here as much if it weren't for chat.
The idea isn't that we dont' have MSN or Yahoo to talk to these people anywhere else, but the interaction when we can all sit and talk together. The actions of a few shouldn't justify punishing the many - even the military has done away with that kind of thinking and we know how behind they can be.

I don't think anyone expected it up immediately, MT, I think most wanted to know so if it's not going to be back for quite some time so we can find an alternative.

This comment alone is what made me the saddest

and this one:

I guess we're all grounded then. :(

Perhaps that is a good idea. You can set it up and maybe we could have a sticked post on how to get onto IRC (lol I know how but for other people who want to visit and chat) and we can have an unofficial chaz chat until MT has time to fix the official one.

I agree with the others, I enjoyed chat a lot. And as Acamp said, without it I probably wont frequent nearly as often as I used to.
I agree with both of you. without chat honestly, I would probably almost never frequent the forum.

Interesting. Looking back at this thread I would have thought that maintaining chaz as it was would have been impressed upon a lot of people.

Whether it be chat, or the forums, whatever, most stated they wanted things to stay pretty much the same, now MT is saying he is in no rush to bring back chat, and maybe NEVER bring it back?

Maybe I'm mistaken, but when you bought this forum you also bought the fact of who is here. The leaders, the followers, the mature, the immature, and all the good feelings and also the hair pulling that goes along with it. Now that certain things don't fit nicely into the overall scheme of things, you want to wipe it out and just eliminate it. I could be wrong, but to me, and I suspect MANY here, that would be a major change here at Chaz, and one I don't feel is for the better.

I agree with snip.

Chaz treated us with respect and was kind.. and I truly miss that.

I feel changes coming to this forum, big changes and not ones for the better.

MT, please understand im not trying to be hostile. but you need to remember that without members, there is no forum. and at the very least we deserve to be spoken to with respect and not like misbehaving children.

well you all have your temporary chat now so whts the problem.

He said he was fixing it. Give him some time. He didn't change the original chat... whereever that template (probably not the right word) came from decided to make changes to the free version

To be honest... after the reaction in this thread for trying to fix the chat... I can't blame him for not wanting to rush it. all he's gotten is grief. and I'm sure he wants to do this right the FIRST time so we don't end up with another thread about how horrible this place is and how unfair it is.

People come in here and jump all over his back and then get ticked off when he reacts defensively... stop giving him a reason to react that way and let him do what he needs to do to fix chat. The less he has to deal with everyone in here the sooner it will be finished :)

and how about a please and thank you every once in a while

this is not directed at you in particular... but I had to quote you.

if we don't want to be treated like misbehaving children then we need to stop ACTING like misbehaving children.

As for the treating with respect.... that's a two way street. I haven't seen any respect from the members. If you WANT respect you also have to GIVE respect. If he has to earn respect... so do all of us and I haven't seen much that is worthy of respect lately :(

Sorry our misbehaving children have left the building...it's just the rest of us that weren't involved now.

I must have forgotten to give MT the daily please and thank you today.

I agree with Snip. (Just wanted to throw that in there)
A please or thank you goes a long way.

rather than everyone coming in and demanding that things be done our way or else. Be polite and I bet you will get a much better reaction

It's all in the way questions are asked.

We need to stop being so accussing.

that being said... your post about someone perhaps making a temporary chat was very helpful to the whole situation. it offered a temporary resolution while the current chat is under construction. I don't think anyone is taking exception to your posts.

We just all need to stop with the "I want gimmee gimmee gimmee" that pops up everytime there is a new announcement
