I used crushed coral now. Great stuff for my cichlids, and I haven't had to add any chems in ages. Plus they adore digging in it.

I was mad when my female swallowed that rock. She was a red zebra, my best breeder female, and had the best fry turnout. Not to mention what a beauty she was. She had this marvelous peachy orange color to her. Her and Mack Daddy threw off hundreds of fry that I sold... I'm sad to say that I didn't keep any of those fry, and the dude I bought them off of got out of the Biz a few months later.

When we had guppies we only ever had males. We did end up with one fish (forget the species, but maybe a platy) that was not the gender it was supposed to be and we had babies. We tried to catch them after they were born but all but three got eaten. :(

Our water here is insanely hard. It's cichlid heaven. But what caught my fancy? Delicate soft water fish! Yup, south american tetras. I had a huge 55 gallon tank that was all R/O water. You should see the bottles I was toting to do my water changes, LOL.

Watch. I'll move to a place with soft water, then decide to give cichlids a try.

So I am getting a small aquarium for christmas. YAY!
I thnk I have an aquarium picked out.... but want your input and ideas for fish to put in it!
I know I want two Guoir... ummmm... i cant spell it, but they are called "kissing fish" becuase they "kiss" every surface they come in contact with.
I also want 6 or 8 glofish (the red and the yellow colors)
I know I'll need one of those sucker fish too...
Also, I liked the Red Finned shark, and read that it is an easy fish to keep as long as you dont have more than ONE of that species....
(will these fish get along and be happy together???)

anyways, here is the aquarium I am looking at....

what do youguys think?

Im not even getting the aquarium or fish for another month so Please... educate me. I come to you eager to learn how to care for these fish!

On a side-note... ( a freakin hilarious one at that) Today, my mom and I were at lunch and we were discussing this aquarium, and she asked me if I wanted live plants r artificial onesfor the aquarium.... my response "artificial, i dont want to have to remember to water the plants" :yikes: .... and yes... I was totally serious when I asked that :yikes: .... it was definatly an "open mouth insert foot and wait for the brain to catch up" moment!
Problem here is you want fish that need different ph.. Pick out the fish you want most then go within ph levels of acceptable.
Golds need a ph of 7.0. sharks need 6.8 and of course watch for those that are preditory in nature.
I use to have tanks and divided by ph as well as middle feeders, top schoolers and bottom feeders.. I have some suggestions but really I would like to know which ones you want the most to go from there..

My male is a red orange:

And the female is a sunburst:

They can be really stunning little fish, and they're quite social.
I thought that the males are the ones with that little tube stiking out and the females are the ones that have the triangle shpe.

You're right on how to sex them. Those aren't my fish, just pictures to show what colors they are. :) But yes, in the pics the sunburst is a male, and the red orange is a female. I should have mentioned that in the original post.
