I was wondering if anyone knows of a breed that could do ok in an apartment and that is not too girly. I'm a man and the breeds I've looked at so far are very small and fluffy. Any advice would be appreciated.

Great Dane. Yes, surprisingly, they do well in apartments. That's not too girly for you is it?;)

The Great Dane can be content living in an apartment, but he must get out daily to stretch his long legs. This athletic dog needs space and exercise. However, he should not exercise too vigorously until he has stopped growing, or he may damage his joints and ligaments.
Great Danes need daily exercise, but are relatively inactive indoors. They have even been known to adjust well to apartment living, as long as they get daily long walks and romps at the park.
They also have really great temperaments!

Although his size may be intimidating, the Great Dane is truly a gentle giant. Great Danes and Great Dane mixes are generally sweet, affectionate dogs who often do quite well with children (as long as they are trained not to jump on them, of course!). Great Danes are family dogs, and need to live indoors with their humans

Greyhound?

Contrary to popular belief they do not need TONS of excercise. They are sprinters, not endurance dogs, so a good run everyday will suffice. They love lounging about :D

And there are thousands or retired racing dogs that need homes :D

That's a great breed too! Known as the worlds fastest dogs and, ironicly, also the worlds biggeset couch potatos.:D

How about a bulldog? They don't need much exercise, and are quite "manly". ;)

John-

I'm always hesitant to recommend my breed to people right off the bat (they're definitely not for everyone), but Shiba Inus are one of the world's best apartment dogs. They are a national treasure of Japan, and the most popular dog there. (Space is at a premium in their home country).

They rarely bark, yet they're naturally protective. They are incredibly clean, being almost cat-like in their habits. If it wasn't for the fact that I show my dogs, I could honestly get away with bathing them about 4 times a year. They don't have doggie odor.

However, they blow coat twice a year (and it's a lot of coat to deal with... you'd be surprised at how much a small dog can shed!), and they are a dog-aggressive breed. They need to be socialized early on, and training needs to be positive and fun. They're brilliant dogs- sometimes smarter than is good for them...

You can see a photo of my bitch in my avatar, and her son at 6 months of age in my signature. They definitely have a big dog look, in a compact body. (When I was searching for a breed, I absolutely wanted an animal that had a "big" look to it- I wasn't interested in a toy breed). If you're interested in more information, let me know or send me a PM, and I can help you figure out if Shibas work for you.

The others have also given some great ideas to help you with your search. Good luck!

Greyhound. I have to say this though...not trying to be rude, but I find your comment about fluffy dogs being "girly" very annoying. IMO there is no such thing as girly. Sure, there are some ditzy girls out there who carry around their little dogs around like toys, however, there are plenty of women who have more important things to do than look perfect and have a bunch of clothes.

Any dog can survive in an apartment, as long as you give them enough exercise.

I think the Greyhound suggestion was marvelous. There are also Italian Greyhounds and Whippets.

You might consider an Olde English Mastiff rescue as well, if you have the personality to deal with a very large, somewhat stubborn, lovable couch potato that can suddenly morph into a real guardian.

Of course, those Shibas have totally stolen my heart, lol!

Greyhounds and Whippets are awesome (I prefer them to Italian Greyhounds because the iggies are sooo fragile.)

How about a Pug if you're looking for a smaller dog with attitude. They're super sturdy, friendly and fairly quiet. They do shed, though. Tons.
