Angel, I feel for you. Border Collies need something to herd, and pretty much anything will do. I've got the same problem with my 14 month old Fila Brasileiro, Kharma. She won't stop herding the cows until she's got them all in one place - every single solitary one of them. So now she doesn't get to go out and run with the other dogs until after dark, which really isn't a solution for a Border Collie, as coyotes are a problem in just about every rural area in North America now and a Border Collie isn't equipped to take on a pack of coyotes.

Have you tried to find some good training materials on herding/droving? That's the next thing I'm going to have to do. Training a BC should be easier than training a Fila since BCs were bred to follow orders and Filas were bred to work on their own.

Border Collies are herders. If you don't like him herding your horses, try giving him something like a stuffed Kong toy or find something else for your dog to herd even.

We ended up getting three sheep. :) They kept the lawns short, kept the horses company, were sweet, loving pets (although a little thick upstairs), gave us TONS of wool, and kept the border collie happy.

I've heard geese are okay too, if you think you might like to have some. They will only take so much from a dog before they turn around to do some chasing of their own!

PLEASE don't let your dog chase the horses!!!! It's very dangerous for the dog and the horse both. Yes, ihe IS a border collie and they are suppose to keep stock together , not chase and scatter them.

I suggest teaching him that horses are off limits. My dogs know better than to chase my horses....I've taught them to respect the horses and to stay out of the pasture.

Before you ever let your dog go to stock (sheep, ducks, or cattle) they need to learn the basics of "gathering"....take some herding classes w/ your dog....but please don't let him chase horses

**It sounds like your dog is lacking brain stimulation. Border collies need high levels of exercise, but they also need high levels of brain stimulation. They have the need to WORK. Do some more training w/ your dog......play games....anything that triggers brain stimulation. It sounds like you just have a "bored" dog.**

I've seen people who let their BC's chase horses b/c they think it's funny, or they think they are actually teaching the dog something.....results in a kick to the head and a dead or very hurt dog and some big vet bills. I see it all too often. I also see bored BC's all to often.

That sounds like fun for a Border Collie! I used to take my Bear to all sorts of things. He loved going to the Highland Games they have near here in Gatlinburg every spring. The Wolff Clan made him an honorary member, lol!

Keep taking your little guy to lots of things like this; he'll be happier, well socialized and much easier to train. I have a philosophy that I can take my dogs anywhere someone can take a pocket dog! They're usually better behaved, too.
