I know there are a few teachers here, not sure about kindergarten teachers but figured I would ask anyway. :)

I want to get 1 or 2 books for two kindergarten classrooms (team teaching situation), but I don't know where to even start looking! Does anyone have any suggestions on what they would like in the classroom and/or where to buy them?

Thank you :)

My brother is in 2nd grade and he's really into Henry & Mudge books. They may be a little too old for kindergarten though. He also liked all the Clifford books. The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a classic! Doreen Cronin had some good kids books.

I've found some, but I don't want to get repeats of what is already in their class. I would ask them, but I want it to be a surprise.

I'll look for those above. I found this one... but I'm just not sure what I want to get! lol

Maybe a Barnes and Noble gift card so the teacher can pick a few she's really wanted?

I thought about that, but I really want to get it and write a note into for the students (I'm observing their classrooms for a few weeks to get my field experience hours).

Millions of Cats, by Wanda Gag. It's incredibly funny, awesome, and has a great moral. Kindergarteners love it (it has a lot of repetition), and it's probably not one they'll already have.

They will probably already have every Eric Carle book under the sun. Several of his books are written into most kindergarten curriculum.

Beyond that, Arrow to the Sun is a good one.

Any Dr. Seuss. I'm partial to the star bellied sneeches and other stories.

Tikki Tikki Tembo, Where the Wild Things Are, Little Bear (the old school one, not ones based on the cartoon), Curious George books, Wait, No Paint, or any other book by Bruce Whatley (he's a BRILLIANT author illustrator).

Anything by Bill Peet. Some favorites are The Wingdingdilly, and Droofus the Dragon.

EDIT: Bill Peet's work is pretty uncommon in schools nowadays. However, it was a huge hit when I brought in my stuff and read it with the kindergarteners and first graders at the school.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Amazon.com: Very Hungry Caterpillar (9780399226236): Eric Carle : Books

Really anything by Eric Carle is fun, i remember seeing his stuff in kindergarten.
We do Eric Carle books in 1st grade, starting out with The Very Hungry Caterpillar (ties in to the Monarch butterfly unit). Henry and Mudge comes a little later in the year. Last week in Kindergarten, the teacher read Henry and the Purple Crayon . She read a fewother books about colors, but I was busy setting up centers and stuff, so I didn't catch the names. One was about mice that had colored feet and what happened when they stepped in a puddle of a different color. Another one was something like "Little Blue and Little Yellow"- it was about 2 little paint splotches, and how they changed color when they hugged. Obviously, last week was color mixing week! LOL

The current favorite around here are David Books!!!!! By David Shannon.... any of them, really. The children LOVE them, and its a good/funny way to teach about rules/manners/right and wrong... stuff like that.
My personal favorite is David Goes to School (naturally) :D they're pretty funny ;)

...Oh and rainbow fish is really good too!
God one! I forgot until just now we read Rainbow Fish at the beginning of the year. The kids then used watercolor to piant their own rainbow fish.

...Another old one...............Make Way for Ducklings...
Hehe- I have Make Way For Ducklings. I saw it at a used book sale a couple of years ago and couldn't resist.

...If You Give a Mouse a Cookie
That's another one we do in 1st grade here.
