I'm really shocked so many people find this rude. I mean it's the same thing as a text, it just means "I'm here". I could see how people might find it rude because you are avoiding saying hi to their families (depending on what your relationship is), but a text does the same thing and no one seems to find that rude. Now I get how laying on the horn or beeping at odd hours would be rude, but I don't understand why a simple honk-honk during normal waking hours would be rude. Maybe people just have a negative association with car horns.

I mean the only time I hear a car horn is when I've done something stupid...I reserve it as sort of a vehicular cuss. I definitely am a texter, though, and have been known to lurk in the car for ages waiting for someone to check their phone and come get me!

Fran's post pretty much sums up why I think it's rude. It's not to the person you're honking at, just to the entire street. Once? Don't care. Repeatedly, or laying on the horn does bug me.

This

I don't mind hearing a quick little "Honk... I'm here". There is a bus that comes and picks up the elderly lady across the street a couple times a week and when it arrives the driver gives a little honk. Not a big deal (although If we are having a sleep in day, I get a little annoyed haha)

but the HONK HONK HONK HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONK HOOOOOOOONK HONK HONK HOOOOOOOOOONK. yeah... RUDE

Perzactly. An "I'm here" text only affects/matters to the person you are picking up.....the neighbors do not have to hear it and frankly don't give a trout if you're here or not! lol

Because a text only "bothers" that one person. A honk bothers the whole street. Not everybody carries "normal hours". I work nights. I am usually asleep when people are honking their horns. Night time is a normal hour for me, and many people I know... so by that rule, I am in just as much right to go honking at people in the middle of the night? (I mean, it doesn't bother me, I slept through the house next door burning down, with all the sirens. I can just see it bothering other people in a similar situation to me. :p )

But why is one honk so much more disruptive than, say, people mowing their lawns, snowblowing or shoveling, leaf-blowing, children playing, loud outdoor conversations, car radios, dogs barking, the garbage truck, etc etc etc.? That's what I don't get. I would find someone laying on the horn rude, but one honk just seems like part of the normal noise of living in a city with other human beings to me.

I'm starting to think I live in a REALLY noisy neighborhood, lol.

Well, a honk-honk is technically two honks. :p

Really though, I guess I just... never hear somebody only ever honk once here. It's always multiple times, or one honk every 5 seconds, or just laying on the horn. Which, I guess people COULD be honking just one and I don't notice.

Fair enough. I don't think I've ever heard anyone really lay on the horn, maybe that's why it's so perplexing to me.

I do think if you live in earshot of neighbors you do have to be used to some noise. I'd prefer people not honk repeatedly, but I don't thnk of it as necessarily "rude" unless it's in the middle of the night and/or extremely excessive. I used to work nights and get that some people sleep during the day, but it's not practical or realistic to expect the whole block to be quiet all day in case someone is sleeping. Maybe I just get used to noise easily--something has to be really obnoxious for me to b bothered by it.

We have actually had a few neighbors who ended up bein drug dealers, and none of their customers ever honked, they went to the door. I guess we just have considerate drug users here-lol.

Meh, expect them to be quiet all day? No. Expect them to be decent and not make unnecessary noises? Yah. Then again, the people next door to me just throw their kid into the back yard when he's crying at night, so I may be asking too much. ;) I mean, I'm awake right now, not making unnecessary noise. Sunday morning, I know my neighbours have some religious group over.. so I just don't hang things on the walls or make other obnoxious noises right then.

I wish customers would go to the door. However, the dealers here know the cops are watching their house, so they don't have "visitor's" too often.

I don't think the rudeness comes from how disruptive it is; ambulances are very disruptive, but they're not rude. I think it's that it's (usually) easily preventable noise. I wouldn't (as an adult) stand on the sidewalk and shriek at someone to come outside; I'd think that was rude too.

ETA: I don't think it's the rudest thing in the universe, and I don't think it's the biggest crime in the neighborhood. I just think it's impolite (in the kind of neighborhood I live in) and I wouldn't do it. That's all.

Yes ... Rude loud neighbors is why I move out to the middle of no where and when I am forced to live in the city, I live in one of the barn dorms at the track (it's quieter and cleaner)

To be honest, I personally think the sound of a horn is obnoxious. For me, it's a lot less about disrupting the neighbours than it is about being annoyed myself. :p

Do you share a wall with your neighbors or is it a single family home? Because that would make a difference to me as far as noise.

I don't let my dogs keep barking, because I do find that obnoxious, even if they are my dogs. Honestly though, we have 3 birds, so our days pretty much consist of a stream of unnecessary noises-lol. Clicks, whistles, fart sounds, kissy sounds, imitations of car alarms, imitations of phones ringing, squawks, species specific calls, a bird imitating the species specific calls of a different bird species, cackles, laughs, the sounds of a toys bell being mauled, the word "Yooo-daaa" being said repeatedly....

Come to think if it, this could be why I get used to noises so easily :rofl1:

Flipping this around...

if honking instead of coming to the door is rude....is it not rude, when being given a ride by someone else (so often that is a favor being done) to expect them to get out of the car to come get you?

I get the honking in and of itself can be irritation depending on situations, but I dont get how NOT coming to the door is rude?

Now that I'm an adult, if someone is doing my a favor... "I'm here" text instead of coming to the door is of course perfectly fine.
Or even just me seeing you and coming out of course!
The rudeness for me lies in making an unnecessary noise that is loud enough to disturb people in the house/street.

BUT when I was younger, when people still commonly did that, it was considered rude not to come to the door (even if they were doing me a favor by picking me up) because my parents would want to see/talk to everyone.
BUT for scheduled pickups (like carpool) even as a child, it's agreed.. someone is doing you a favor by picking you up, there are no cell phones then you better be UP, looking out the window and ready for them to come get you. They shouldn't have to come out.

Not coming to the door is "rude" only when A) Their are parents who want to meet the person picking up their child or B) The only alternative to you coming to the door is you honking the horn at the whole house

or a first date.
Come to the door or call and ask nicely to come outside lest we be late for a show or because of city parking problems.
Honk and I will never date you ever.

BUMP.

I'm just bumping this because the neighbor I mentioned (who spurred on this thread) now has someone sitting outside the house in their POS beeping instead of going to the door. This just seems unreasonably rude to me.
