Seriously, they are -supposed- to be like that. Our vet in Nevada had one and she was absolutely tiny, but perfectly healthy. Not emaciated at all, she just didn't put on a lot of muscle or fat. She was an energetic dog and did lure coursing I believe.

Looking at the pictures - by American standards they look pretty terrible. What I am keeping in mind when i look at these pictures, however, is that the majority of the pictures are showing these dogs in their "native" habitat - which isn't exactly up to the same standards as my Mojo enjoys. I believe the part of africa that these dogs are from (and thus the pictures are from) is predominantly a 3rd world country which will of course not have as much wealth/resources for the care of their dogs.

Also this breeder seems commited to keeping the dogs to their original (and cultural) purpose in Africa - hence feeding it's traditional diet - instead of changing the breed by americanizing it. You can even americanize a dog by changing it's diet... after all.

But this is just my opinion.

You have met one in person before?
Yup my uncle has a friend who has one of them and two grey hounds. Then when we go on vacation in Florida a woman who owns one of the houses next to the one we rent and she owns two Azawakhs a male and female I beleive she had them imported and I know they were extremly expensive because she is always paranoid about her dogs.

I havent seen the ones in florida in a long time. My uncles friend I havent seen in awhile either. I think my mom has pictures of the dogs in florida somewhere I will ask her if she can dig them out for me.

Thanks for sharing! This is a neat looking breed, very austere. Their head is almost whippet-like in shape, versus the more pointed structure of the greyhound.

Despite claims that these dogs look disgusted or emaciated, I'm more inclined to believe that it's a breed that simply does not put on fat or much thick muscle. We as a culture are so used to seeing rounder, chubbier dogs that ancient desert breeds such as this come as an unpleasant shock.

That's neat! If you ever visit, try not to bring one home with you.:D
It would be hard not to . . . bet they can run a coyote down ;) I'll bet they're a lot tougher than they look, too. It does sound like their temperament is very similar to the Filas'.
