Gus grew strangely. When we got him he looked like this, long and very low, about 3 months old (We didn't know his birthday at that point, so the "4 months" was a total guess, his correct birthday was 12/23/84) and I think he was about 17 pounds:
By the time he was 6 months old, he was the same length as my 96 pound yellow Lab. Then came the height growth, from 6 months to about a year, when he ended up about 23" at the shoulder, and a very skinny 40-45 or so pounds. He was so skinny at that point I could put my hand across his "waist" and grip it like a 2x4. Then at about 15 months, the muscles came, all of a sudden. It was like he was on steroids, he was suddenly 60, then 70, and topping out at 75 pounds at about 2 years. He looks fat in this pic, but he was hard as a rock, and part of what you see is very loose skin. his "wrists" are about the size of a woman's wrist. You can't tell from this pic that his head is VERY big and wide. I could and did put my hand in his mouth up to my wrist (He liked to suck on my hands for some reason), and he could close his mouth almost completely with my hand between his teeth and my fingers and palm was barely touching them, and I wasn't touching the back of his mouth. Since it appears that jaw width determines bite power, he had a very powerful bite "Finger amputatin' teeth", as a couple of vets called it. He's about 2.5 in the pic, as the Lab with him, Joe died about 6 months after the pic was taken.
