What type of Mastiff, and what is it you want to know? I have Brazilians (Fila Brasileiro), one of the more . . er . . . "difficult" and temperamental types. They're all somewhat quirky, except for the English Mastiffs, who are about as laid back as a dog can get unless they think their family is threatened.

We took Guinness and Sawyer to the park last night and Guinness made friends with an OEM. It was quite amusing to watch, because she had to stand on her hind legs just to touch noses. :) He was quite calm, esp. considering he's intact.

I have a special place in my heart for Mastiff's. An English Mastiff is what turned me from a cat person to a dog lover. A good friend used to do Mastiff rescue and she had one that they kept named Missy. She had been beat as a puppy and was deathly afraid of men, but for some reason she loved me. Once I got over the slobber covered jeans from having a giant head laying on my lap I knew I wanted a big dog. Missy was just a gentle soul that was treated so bad in her early years but was able to eventually live a happy life, She passed on 2 years ago, she went out in her back yard and layed down for a nap and never woke up. My friend is the one that found Tank for me and she thinks Missy guided her to make the phone call that put us together.

Mastiffs are a group of large, solidly built breeds of dogs, typically with heavy bones, pendant ears, a relatively short and well muscled neck, and a short muzzle. The English Mastiff breed is also sometimes called simply a Mastiff. Although some mastiff breeds are used for search and rescue, such as the Saint Bernard and the Newfoundland, most are used as guard dogs, due to their deep voices and natural guarding instincts, or herding dogs, not for actual herding but for protection against large predators as well as poachers. Some breeds, like the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog have also been used as cart dogs.

well i will have to dig into some files to find some pics of my lovely pup. He is still young. He is weighing in at 67 pounds at the age of 5 months. Who thinks mastiff pups are lazy didnt see them at this age they are very spurty with their energy and when he wants to play watch out there isnt a devise in the world to hold these guys down. He loves his ropes and soft toys to chew on. He will only mess with his kong till he licks all the food out then he will just leave it lay. Geesh i thought he might like a chewy but i guess not. Oh well. Lets see. He is very family oriented. He does very well with young children even at such a young age he is aware of his size with kids, but with me he dont care if could knock me over and lick me to death he would. Well i have to find my password and stuff for photobucket then i will post some pics

Do be sure and give him daily vitamin C to help the growth and strength of those big bones and joints! How long before you can ride him or let him pull the car??? Rofl. Good way to save money on gas.......just let the dog pull you along.

I can help you...

You would have better luck if you searched for a specific mastiff breed. here are a few: old english mastiff, bull mastiff, roman rottwieler, mastino (neopolitan mastiff), dogue de bordeaux (french mastiff), tibetan mastiff, pyrenean mastiff, and the spanish mastiff. Mastiffs make great guard dogs and most of them will protect you till the death. They are sweet natured, not too hyper, but they can be stuborn with training. They are not dog aggressive(make sure to get one from a responsible breeder!)

Please make sure you do as much research as humanly possible when it comes to choosing a particular Mastiff. Old English Mastiffs are the most laid back in general, Filas (Brazilian Mastiffs) are the 'best', so to speak, with other dogs but are very stranger aggressive. As a rule of thumb, Mastiffs in general are not the best with other animals, and Bull Mastiffs usually are *very* dog aggressive. I would stay away from Bulls unless you do intend on only having one dog.
