Does anyone have experience using Amitriptyline for their dog?
My basset mix has always had separation anxiety (consisting of urinating and defacating as I am leaving to go to work) He gets worked up quite a bit, but not nearly as bad as when he was younger.
I took him to the vet this week-end and the vet suggested Amitriptyline.

Has anyone ever used it? If so, what can you tell me about how it works, etc?

I have used it on a cat. It could be entirely different with a dog or a different cat. Even a very small dose makes this particular cat into a puddle of goo. The circumstance was a urinary tract infection. It did resolve any anxiety she had and made it easy to feed her antibiotics. However, it was a severe personality change. She just sat there like a lump. She still used her box, but hardly had ambition to go and eat. Nothing bothered, but nothing stimulated her either. Fortunately, she only needed it temporarily.
